Blast kills 5 in disputed area in northern Iraq

(AP) ? Iraqi authorities say a car bomb has killed five people and wounded eleven others in the country's north, the second day in a row in which blasts have targeted disputed regions there.

Police officials said the explosion Monday morning was in al-Mouafaqiyah, a village inhabited by families from the Shabak ethnic group. The region near the city of Mosul, 360 kilometers (225 miles) northwest of Baghdad, is claimed by Arabs, Turkmen and Kurds.

The Shabak have their own distinct language and belief system.

Medics in nearby hospital confirmed the casualties. All officials in the two spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release details to journalists.

Sunday's attacks left at least eight killed and dozens wounded.

Pioneers of Digital Inspires Professionals Beyond Digital Success ...

pioneers of digitalThe new book by Paul Springer and Mel Carson (@digipioneers), Pioneers of Digital, Success Stories from Leaders in Advertising, Marketing, Search and Social Media, may seem too early of book to write.

Business benefits from cloud platforms are just dawning, right?

Well, the book?s scope and timing are more than on track.? While a nod is given to the earliest of computer innovators such as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, Pioneers of Digital showcases 20 digital professional luminaries whose choices and outcomes are changing the face of how small business is getting done.? I picked the book up while perusing NetGalley online, attracted by its promise of remarkable profiles.? It was a promise well kept.

Springer and Carson have combined experiences that compliment the men and women they selected to honor. Springer, author of Ads To Icons, is head of Research & Postgrad Development for the Faculty of Design Media & Management at Buckinghamshire New University in the UK. Mel Carson was a key figure at Microsoft Advertising as a Digital Marketing Evangelist and is currently writing and speaking about online advertising.

Although a few people noted may be familiar to those who spend countless hours at a Web browser, many are unknowns representing regions as varied as the industries the authors selected. ?The result from reading the book is a broad perspective that shows how organizations can best apply technology to strategic advantage.

For example, Thomas Gensemer represented a cause?centered online funding campaigns, instrumental in raising $600 million for President Barrack Obama?s 2008 presidential campaign. He learned from fail-fast experiences, like the quote below, about Howard Dean?s 2004 presidential campaign. Lessons that made Obama?s online fundraising tactics a political game changer:

?Despite not winning elections with (Howard) Dean and (General) Clark?s Presidential campaigns, they provided valuable lessons. ??One lesson included keeping all correspondences up to date. After one campaign, Gensemer discovered a mailbox filled with unread e-mails that were responses to a feedback link? From this Gensemer learned not to create opportunities for people to engage if you can?t service them?.?

Analytic practitioners should love that perspective, as well as the treatment given to Avinash Kaushik, author of?Web Analytics 2.0.? Other standouts include? June Cohen, who lead the team that grew the well-known TED videos. And Vanessa Fox, an ex-Googler who was influential in the Web development solution, Webmaster Tools.

Many of these leaders come from startup environments that can seems more akin to Silicon Valley than to Main street. But the profiles are well organized so that reading does not require drudgery.? Each segment starts with a brief bio and ends with three ?sound bytes? ? takeways and insights from the featured pioneers.? Sandwiched between bios ?n? bytes are career descriptions as well written as a good novel and as intriguing as watching your favorite band on a VH1 Behind The Music episode (though without video or music, but that is a nit pick).

I adored reading Vanessa Fox?s story, an intriguing mix of math and linguistics that spurred her early reputation for computer user interface. ?Her viewpoint of linking online with offline activity showed promise in 1995, way before a user interface was in vogue:

?By combining her love of writing with her new found technical know how, she was able to start improving user experiences by helping make connections which today might seem so obvious, but in 1995 didn?t exist because most programmers simply didn?t think that way. A traditional offline staple like printing collateral to take to an event was elevated to a whole new level by digitalm, ?Some of us started thinking there was so much more we can do. We could host conference brochures online just in case we run out at an expo.? We could make it so you could link between different ones and maybe you wouldn?t need to print them at all.?

Another worthwhile story is Gurbaksh Chahal, a multi-millionaire before the age of 30 through creating Web agencies ClickAgents and BlueLithium.? His profile highlights the importance of good business practices over being enchanted over the newest tech:

?I remember March 2009 when the Dow hit 6600, people thought it would go to 5000. Fast forward to now?and you have a birth of companies trying to do what the original dotcom companies did in the first boom?but they have no idea how to even generate revenue let along profit? It?s incentivizing the wrong type of entrepreneur and creating the wrong type of business. It?s basically trying to go ahead and flip to the greater tool, and that is not a real business.?

From these kinds of profiles, readers will gain an overall gimpse into similarities and differences that matter in entrepreneurship.? Many of these profile pioneers were hands-on and self-learners ? not so much self-made as much as a personal realization that the learning never stops. That perspective is understandably integral to digital-related industries, but Pioneers of Digital makes the mantra a living one in the professional lives shared.

Readers interested in social media or seeking interesting business people for professional inspiration will be more that satisfied. ?Pioneers of Digital has an approach that reminds me of Jewels, a book on African American women and their professional lives.? But for fun tech history reading, combine this book with Bricklin on Technology, a homage to tech from the ?Godfather of spreadsheets,? Visicalc founder Dan Bricklin.

Ultimately read Pioneers of Digital to know what it takes to truly stand out in your field.

NeilMed Donates 200,000 of Sinus Rinse Products to US Troops

NeilMed is donating $2 million worth (200,000 units) of its all natural, over-the-counter Sinus Rinse and NasoGel products to U.S. troops serving overseas.

Santa Rosa, CA (PRWEB) December 14, 2012

NeilMed Pharmaceuticals, Inc., President Nina Mehta announced today that NeilMed is donating $2 million worth (200,000 units) of its all natural, over-the-counter Sinus Rinse and NasoGel products to U.S. troops serving in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other locations in the Middle East. Ms. Mehta said NeilMed products will help servicemen and women serving in dry, dusty areas to soothe and hydrate their dry and irritated nasal passages in a drug free manner.

?These troops are putting their lives on the line for our safety and for our nation,? Ms. Mehta said. ?We at NeilMed are happy to have a way to help them and to express our appreciation for their service.?

NeilMed has teamed up with the University of North Carolina?s Department of Otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat) and the American Rhinologic Society (ARS) to ship 100,000 units of its Sinus Rinse Kit and 100,000 units of NasoGel Spray for Dry Noses to the troops. NeilMed?s donation was initiated by University of North Carolina nurse Katie Sams. Her husband, Alex, was suffering from nasal congestion and irritation while serving as a U.S. Army Specialist in the Helmand province of Afghanistan. Sams asked Dr. Brent Senior, UNC Professor of Otolaryngology and Chief of the Division of Rhinology, Allergy, and Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery, about sending NeilMed Sinus Rinse samples to her husband and his fellow soldiers. Dr. Brent contacted NeilMed Founder & CEO Ketan Mehta, M.D., at NeilMed, and together they arranged for NeilMed?s donation. NeilMed is shipping its products directly to the troops from its manufacturing plant in Santa Rosa, California.

?Using Sinus Rinse is one of the proven ways to naturally and effectively treat rhinitis and sinusitis in patients,? Dr. Senior said. ?For the guys serving in the military who are exposed to particulate matter in sand and whose nasal passages are often dry. Sinus Rinse and NasoGel are perfect options for keeping their noses clean, moist and clear and keeping themselves healthy so they are able to work to the best of their ability without any of the side effects of drugs.?

NeilMed is the largest manufacturer and supplier of over-the-counter large volume saline nasal irrigation systems in the world. Its products, which are used to treat nasal mucus, colds, allergies, postnasal drip and nasal dryness, are sold by supermarkets, drug stores, big box clubs, and general merchandisers throughout the U.S. They are also available worldwide in several countries on all continents.

Nina Mehta said, "NeilMed is happy to donate its products to people and organizations in need. We are fortunate to have achieved success and it gives us great satisfaction and a sense of pride to be able to help others. We will do same for the fire fighters as they get lots of smoke and fume exposure."

Dr. Mehta announced that anyone who has relatifves or friends in the armed forces or fire departments, please free to contact the company and NeilMed will be happy to ship out the products for use by active military and active fire fighters. Direct email addresses of president Ms. Nina Mehta and founder and CEO Dr. Mehta are provided at the top.

'Ghosbusters' Live Read: Rogen, Black, and Wilson Cross Streams

As someone who observes the film industry from a journalistic standpoint more so than a fan these days, it's easy to get jaded and cynical about all of Hollywood, full of overpaid actors with too-fragile egos, studios churning out quantity over quality, making movies to win awards, award season, etc. Thankfully there are ways to [...]

New Google Maps App Lights a Beacon in iOS Darkness

iPhone users can once again find their way in the world as Google Maps was approved by Apple on Thursday and will be listed in the iTunes App Store. This comes three months after the iPhone maker removed Google Maps as a built-in feature of iOS and replaced it with what polite people called a substandard mapping solution.

Study promoting coffee drinking benefits needs more research, says dentist

Dec. 13, 2012 ? A recent study from the American Cancer Society purports that heavy coffee drinkers may reduce risk of dying from mouth and throat cancer by half but one dentist is not raising a coffee cup in support. "I do not recommend that my patients drink coffee," says Martin Hogan, DDS, Loyola University Health System. "The study does suggest benefits but I would like to see more studies done to prove this correlation."

Coffee, along with tea and red wine, is a top cause of damage to tooth enamel.

"As with any study, there are always variables that are not documented, such as alcohol consumption and tobacco use which are top causes of oral cancer," said the dentist who regularly assists in the diagnosis of oral cancer and works with oncological patients at Loyola. According to Hogan, risks for oral/pharyngeal cancers include alcohol consumption, smoking, chewing tobacco, biological factors such as fungi, viruses such as HPV (especially strain 16 for oral cancers) and physical factors including exposure to UV radiation and exposure to x-rays.

Many patients dismiss the early signs of oral cancer and do not report symptoms until the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. "Oral cancer signs range from chronic sores in the mouth that do not heal to difficulty swallowing and many patients do not think they are a big enough deal to seek medical attention," says Hogan.

Common signs of oral/pharyngeal cancer include:

  • A sore or lesion in the mouth that does not heal within two weeks
  • A lump or thickening in the cheek
  • A white or red patch on the gums, tongue, tonsil, or lining of the mouth
  • A sore throat or a feeling that something is caught in the throat
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing
  • Difficulty moving the jaw or tongue
  • Numbness of the tongue or other area of the mouth
  • Swelling of the jaw that causes dentures to fit poorly or become uncomfortable
  • Chronic hoarseness

The growing trend of sugary drinks also is taking a toll on oral health. "Sports drinks and soda are also big offenders of dental disease and actually are less damaging if they are consumed at one sitting as opposed to continuously sipping on the drinks over the course of an afternoon," he says. "Sipping prolongs the exposure of the teeth to the sugary and/or acidic liquids and increases the damage to the teeth."
