Iran to probe alleged death of a jailed blogger

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's parliament announced Sunday it would probe reports that a jailed blogger died suspiciously in custody earlier this week, the official IRNA news agency reported.

This is Iran's first official reaction to the alleged death of Sattar Beheshti, in a rare example of parliament taking up allegations of human rights abuses first raised internationally. The case gained publicity over the weekend when U.S. State Department and a press freedom group called for an inquiry.

Deputy parliamentary speaker Mohammad Hasan Abutorabifard said that the legislature's influential committee on national security and foreign policy has been assigned to look into Beheshti's alleged death.

"The committee has been informed about the incident and its report will be announced to the nation and lawmakers," IRNA quoted Aboutorabifard as saying.

The announcement came after a speech by lawmaker Ahmad Tavakoli, a prominent conservative critic of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in the open session of the parliament that was broadcast on state radio, in which he criticized officials for their silence over a case that has received international attention.

"Why do the Foreign Ministry and judiciary not explain this? A death has happened and it should be explained," said Tavakoli.

"How can summoning a blogger (for questioning) be useful? Why do you generate expenses for the Islamic system?" he said.

He urged authorities to look for "corrupt" officials who have been involved in the case, instead of mistreating bloggers.

Lawmaker Ebrahim Nekou, who represents Beheshti's hometone of Robat Karim, also protested the alleged death. "I want to express my objection to killing of a blogger in my constituency while asking why the case was not announced to the officials of the town and to me."

The 35-year-old Beheshti was reportedly a factory worker. He was not a well-known activist.

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said Saturday that Iranian authorities must release full details of the "suspicious death," and the State Department has also called for a probe.

Dozens of bloggers and journalists have been arrested amid widespread crackdowns in Iran in recent years.

In 2010, Iran's parliament played a major role in probing the deaths in detention of three people during the unrest that followed disputed 2009 elections. The probe led to the dismissal of several judicial and police officials.

Why the Tea Party Failed

Mitt Romney speaks to Tea Party supporters. Mitt Romney speaks to Tea Party supporters in Michigan in February.

The day after the election, FreedomWorks and its key state-to-state organizers dialed into a one-of-a-kind conference call. For the first time ever, they would be discussing a crushing defeat. Their ?Take the Senate? campaign had ended with Democrats in greater control of the upper house. Their turnout game, powered by a new web-based canvassing app, was swatted aside by labor and the Democrats. Richard Mourdock, the Indiana politician who?d been with Tea Partiers since the 2009 Taxpayer March on Washington, had lost one of the party?s safest seats.

And now John Boehner was selling them out. The speaker of the House had just jimmied open the door to ?new revenue,? which conservatives hear?correctly, typically?as ?new taxes.?

?People were upset,? remembers Brendan Steinhauser, FreedomWorks? director of state campaigns. ?Does Boehner cave in to what Obama and Reid want to do, or does he at least stay relatively strong on these issues? He?s probably going to a lot of these Republican, Tea Party folks, and say: OK, guys, here?s what we need to do to stay in power. That?s the fear.?

How does the Tea Party stop it? Good question. What else does the Tea Party want to halt? Better, more complicated question. The movement, which starts its second four-year term in February, was built on opposition to the president?s stimulus and health care law. There?s no real chance of a new stimulus bill, and the health care law is safe until at least 2017. In the foxhole, when the only goal was defeating Obama, there were no real disagreements among Tea Partiers and the rest of the conservative base. That?s over, too.

Over the last few days, as they?ve processed data from the election, the right?s Obama-era grass-roots groups are divided over what went wrong and what to do next. FreedomWorks? get-out-the-vote app was called Political Gravity. It had been developed by American Majority, a grass-roots group run by Ned Ryun, which had its own offices in swing states and its own literature telling voters to save their children from the rampaging national debt. On Thursday, Ryun was downright dismissive of how the software had been used. Teams of Tea Partiers went to homes and tried to talk to residents about their terrific Senate candidates. If no one was home, they put information at the door.

?When you knock at a door, you?ve got to talk to people,? asked Ryun. ?You dropped off 50,000 door-hangers? Great. All you did was waste trees.?

After an election where nothing seemed to work, you can hear the case made against almost everything. Ralph Reed?s Faith & Freedom coalition made it to the New York Times, because Reed talked a good game about mobilizing the sort of white evangelical voters who?d been pushed back into politics by the Tea Party. But the mobilization didn?t outmatch the Democrats. ?Ralph Reed says he made 12 million robocalls?? asked Ryan. ?Great. Who gives a rip??

From the Holocaust to Thalidomide: A Nazi Legacy

Thalidomide children

I was attending World Federation of Jewish Child Survivors of the Holocaust and Descendants 24th Annual International Conference in Cleveland last week, when my aunt, herself a survivor, handed me a copy of Newsweek with a cover article, ?The Nazis and Thalidomide: The Worst Drug Scandal of All Time.? The story was prompted by the drug developer, Germany?s Gr?nenthal, unexpectedly issuing an apology to the victims of its teratogenic drug?babies who sustained life-long wounds inflicted by their drug more than 50 years earlier.

I?ve written some about thalidomide previously, in my initial Clinical Trials for Beginners posts, (here and here). For those unfamiliar with the tale, Thalidomide was first released in 1957, with over-the-counter availability in Germany, to treat morning sickness. There were reassurances from the manufacturer that the drug was totally safe, even during pregnancy. It took several years of widespread use before the link was clearly made between thalidomide?s use in early pregnancy and the cluster of children who were subsequently born with small seal-like flippers instead of limbs (phocomelia). Thalidomide was then removed from the market. This tragic effects of thalidomide on developing embryos marks one of the most notorious failures in the history of drug development.

In a controversial move, the FDA approved thalidomide?s use in multiple myeloma in 1998. It?s also being used now for treating leprosy. Studies are in process for using thalidomide to treat the chronic cough of interstitial fibrosis, as well.

We?ve discussed before that side effects often are not seen until after a drug is marketed. Since only small numbers of patients participate in clinical trials, and some adverse events occur very rarely, side effects like the phocomelia, the small flipper-like limb deformities associated with thalidomide, are not detected until post-marketing.

This brings us back to thalidomide?s resurfacing in the news. In September, Gr?nenthal, developer of the drug, rather inexplicably issued an apology to the victims of its drug?more than 50 years after the debacle began. Chief executive Harald Stock unveiled a bronze statue of a child born without limbs, stating, ?We ask for forgiveness that for nearly 50 years we didn?t find a way of reaching out to you from human being to human being? We ask that you regard our long silence as a sign of the shock that your fate caused in us. We wish that the thalidomide tragedy had never happened.?

I found his apology to the more than 10,000 babies born with serious birth defects?including complete absence of limbs?about as touching as they, their parents and caretakers did. What these victims are asking is financial support to assist in their care and medical needs, something Chemie Gr?nenthal has resisted. One of the most chilling aspects of this sordid tale is the assertion that ?in the immediate postwar years, a rogues? gallery of wanted and convicted Nazis, mass murderers who had practiced their science in notorious death camps, ended up working at Gr?nenthal, some of them directly involved in the development of thalidomide.? One of the most reprehensible was Otto Ambros, an inventor of sarin (the nerve gas), who had been convicted of mass murder at the Nuremburg trials but was subsequently freed. After helping the US chemical industry, he went on to become chairman of Gr?nenthal?s advisory committee when thalidomide was developed. Newsweek?s Roger Williams and Jonathan Stone (no relation) give further horrifying details about links between Gr?nenthal and other Nazi?s as well, some of whom experimented on inmates at concentration camps such as Auschwitz and Buchenwald. Another former Nazi, Heinrich Muckter, received huge bonuses for rushing thalidomide to market, despite inadequate testing.

It?s no small irony that the response to the horrors of these ?experiments? on innocent people led to development of the research codes of ethics, the Nuremberg Code, Declaration of Helsinki and the Belmont Report, which are the standards for all human research now.

Kati, 1946

This is my aunt, who survived Auschwitz in her teens. Miraculously, some, though not all, of our family survived. This is a more recent photo of her, from an educational exhibit in Omaha on the Holocaust.

Kati - 2008

There were several striking things about this Holocaust survivor and descendants? conference. One was the ongoing pain and scars that still linger and are now cross-generational. Another was the survivors? remarkable resilience. Yet another was how many have gone on into helping professions, part of their attempt at tikkun olam, or repair of the world. My father followed that path, making artificial limbs and prosthesis?almost certainly for thalidomide babies among them. It was my accompanying him on house calls to patients when I was a child that first stirred my interest in becoming a physician and my special interest in medical ethics and issues of social justice. And the conference?s final message was, ?Remember?never forget? There is hope for your future.?

The take home message of the juxtaposition of this moving conference and then reading more about the Nazi connection to thalidomide is that, despite the Nuremberg trials and the development of ethical principles to guide research, we haven?t yet gotten it. It has taken fifty years for a tepid apology for thalidomide to arrive. Worse, there are still ongoing genocides throughout the world, either related to historic ethnic rivalries or, more often, related to money and greed. There are still major ethical abuses in conducting clinical trials. We seem to be confronted almost daily by evidence of our mistakes. What more will it take for us to learn and put people and ethics above power and profits?

Barack O-bonbon: French sweet on president's reelection

Although the French government didn't officially pick a side in the US presidential campaign, its preference was hardly a secret. ?If I were an American citizen, I would vote for Obama with no hesitation,? Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault told France Inter radio two weeks ago.

So it's no surprise that President Obama's reelection victory has been met with vocal approval.

?The reelection of Barack Obama is excellent news,? Foreign Affairs Minister Laurent Fabius said Wednesday morning as he came out of the government?s weekly meeting at the presidential palace. ?It?s excellent news first for the United States because President Obama has the abilities to face the challenges of the United States, which are jobs, growth, the reduction of the budgetary deficit, the problems of immigration, the problems of education.?

Think you know Europe? Take our geography quiz.

Mr. Fabius added, ?And it is excellent news for France and for Europe: For France because we have excellent relations with the American administration and because on issues such as growth, climate, we plan on working with the United States, and also because we need their support on issues that are called Iran, that are called Syria, that are called the Israel-Palestine conflict.?

Minutes before Fabius spoke, Minister of Industrial Renewal Arnaud Montebourg walked by camera crews and reporters in the presidential palace?s courtyard, simply saying ?Barack Obama? as he gave a thumbs up.

France?s President Fran?ois Hollande congratulated President Barack Obama for his reelection Wednesday and said he was confident that the United States and France would increase their cooperation on global issues, according to a message from Mr. Hollande to Mr. Obama that was made public by the French presidential palace.

?France and the United States share common values,? the statement read. ?I am convinced that we will reinforce our partnership even more during your new presidential term to help bring economic growth back into our countries, to fight against unemployment and to find solutions to crises threatening us, in particular in the Middle East.?

The government's support for the American president mirrors that of the French public. A Nov. 5 poll by CSA polling institute for BFMTV news channel found that 78 percent of French people said they supported Obama in the US presidential election, while 17 percent had no opinion and 5 percent supported Romney.

Hall Garner, a professor and chair of international comparative politics at The American University of Paris, says Obama benefits from a positive view among the French that he is, unlike Romney, committed to cooperating with foreign countries rather than making unilateral moves on the global stage.

?Romney was seen as quite negative,? Gardner says. ?He?s seen as anti-European Union. Obama is seen as more pro-European Union, more willing to work with international organizations.?

Still, Obama's support for Europe and France is not without limits. Olivier Zajec, a research fellow at the Institute of Strategy and Conflicts, says the relations between the US and France are generally good but Obama?s administration tends to look down on European countries.

?[The US] sees Europe as a partner but a partner that plays in a lower league, if you will,? Zajec says. ?A partner that doesn?t have its political personality, its own interests, and a will in terms of international relations. In a way, in the view of the US, Europe is fine that way and if it could continue to behave as a relatively obeying aide it would be interesting.?

The Weather Channel names its first winter storm

NEW YORK (AP) ? To people who were caught in snarled traffic or had to shovel snow with leaves still on the trees, the storm pulling off the East Coast on Thursday was your basic nor'easter.

To The Weather Channel, it was Athena.

The network has taken to naming winter storms, much like is done for tropical systems. The Weather Channel says it makes the storms easier to identify and will raise awareness among those in their paths.

It also draws attention to The Weather Channel at times of bad weather, when the network's ratings usually soar.

The National Weather Service names hurricanes but isn't recognizing the cable channel's winter storm names. The government agency sent out an advisory to its personnel Wednesday asking them to "please refrain from using the term 'Athena' in any of our products." Many news services, including The Associated Press, aren't recognizing the names in their coverage, either.

The weather service has said it has no opinion about the names but noted that winter storms can end and redevelop, making it difficult to define where one storm ends and another begins.

Oddly enough, it was the weather service that first dubbed Superstorm Sandy "Frankenstorm" many days before it made landfall. That nickname faded, in large part because The Weather Channel would not use it for fear it made light of a serious situation.

At The Weather Channel, a team of meteorologists decides which winter storms get names based on factors like expected snow depth and wind speed, handing them out no more than three days in advance.

Athena was named, in part, for fears that it would add to damage in areas already reeling from Sandy. The winter storm dropped as much as a foot of snow in some parts of New Jersey and knocked out power to tens of thousands of customers.

The Weather Channel has already named another winter storm expected to sock the Northern Plains as Brutus.

Earlier this fall, the network released in advance a list of 26 names it will be using for storms, also like is done for hurricanes. The names, including Helen, Luna, Magnus and Ukko, are primarily based in Greek or Roman mythology, although the storm dubbed simply Q was named for the New York City subway line.

If anyone is digging out from Zeus in a couple of months, you'll know it has been a brutal winter.
