SEO is Dead! Long Live SEO! | Search Influence Internet Marketing ...

Google Panda eats bad content up like bamboo!

Starting in February of 2011, Google began updating its Page Rank algorithms to weed out what they deemed ?thin content? and black hat SEO. Google?s algorithmic updates were specifically targeting low-quality content farms and websites engaged in dubious practices to increase their Page Rank, such as keyword stuffing or link schemes.?With these updates, playfully named Panda and Penguin, Google seemed to be sending a volley out to the web marketing world to shape up or risk a deduction in Page Rank.

Here. Have a tissue.

Here. Have a tissue.

And what have most SEO-related blogs responded with? A histrionic outcry of, ?SEO is dead!? While the melodrama may be a fun read, it couldn?t be less accurate. SEO is not dead, and it certainly isn?t dying. Google?s changes have surely changed the landscape of what SEO considers best practices, but that is far from the death knell that bloggers have been touting it as.

Rather than trying to render SEO irrelevant, Google is focusing on user experience in search results. Is your website informative and useful to the user? It seems the biggest focus of these updates is to promote higher quality content and to demote websites that provide the user with little or no substance at all.

Visitor engagement is the new key to higher Page Rank ? a real and organic exchange of information and content rather than the detached exchange link exchange. I suspect, since both Google and Bing have indicated that social networks are a factor in Page Rank, that having a reputable Twitter or Facebook account and sharing links there will become more and more important.

The focus is shifting from quantity to quality. Visitors want to know that a link they click will actually have the information they need rather than just look like it. Instead of using content farms and irrelevant linking, Google is encouraging the SEO world to produce real content for the real users who visit websites.

So stop shouting, ?SEO IS DEAD? and start shouting, ?LONG LIVE SEO!?

(AP Photo/Lynne Sladky, File)

(AP) ? The U.S. unemployment rate dropped below 8 percent for the first time since the month President Barack Obama took office, a surprising lift for both the economy and his re-election hopes in the final weeks of the campaign.

The rate, the most-watched measure of the country's economic health, tumbled to 7.8 percent in September from 8.1 percent in August. It fell because a government survey of households found that 873,000 more people had jobs, the biggest jump since January 2003.

The government's other monthly survey, of employers, showed they added a modest 114,000 jobs in September, but it also showed job growth in July and August was stronger than first thought.

Obama, eager to shift attention from a disappointing performance at the first presidential debate, said Friday that the report showed the country "has come too far to turn back now."

His Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, countered: "This is not what a real recovery looks like."

The drop brought the jobless rate back to where it was when Obama was sworn in, in January 2009, and snapped a 43-month streak in which unemployment was 8 percent or higher ? a run Romney had been emphasizing.

The October jobs report comes out Nov. 2, four days before the election, so Friday's report provided one of the final snapshots of the economy as undecided voters make up their minds.

The government calculates the unemployment rate by calling 60,000 households and asking whether the adults have jobs, and whether those who don't are looking for work.

Those who do not have jobs and are looking are counted as unemployed. Those who aren't looking are not considered part of the work force and aren't counted as unemployed.

A separate monthly survey seeks information from 140,000 companies and government agencies that together employ about one in three nonfarm workers in the United States.

That survey found that the economy added 114,000 jobs in September, the fewest since June. Most of the job growth came in service businesses such as health care and restaurants.

The Labor Department raised its job-creation figures by a total of 86,000 jobs for July and August. The July figure was revised from 141,000 to 181,000, and the August figure from 96,000 to 142,000.

Taken together, the two surveys suggest the job situation in the United States is better than was thought.

Economist Joel Naroff, president of Naroff Economic Advisors, called the strong employment reports "a shocker" that showed the job market was sturdier than most economists had thought.

Financial markets seemed less impressed. The Dow Jones industrial average climbed as much as 86 points in early trading but drifted lower for most of the rest of the day. It finished up 34 points at 13,610. The Standard & Poor's 500 index, a broader measure, was down a fraction of a point.

Stock indexes have been trading at or near their highest levels since December 2007, the month the Great Recession began. They have gotten a lift from Federal Reserve efforts to stimulate the economy, and by a European Central Bank plan to buy the bonds of financially troubled countries to ease a debt crisis there.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note climbed by 0.06 percentage point to 1.73 percent, a sign that investors were more willing to embrace risk and leave the relative safety of the bond market.

The unemployment figures were so surprisingly strong that some pundits and at least one member of Congress, Florida Republican Allen West, accused the Obama administration of manipulating the statistics to help the president's prospects.

On Wednesday, Obama was widely seen as having lost his first debate with Romney.

Jack Welch, the retired former CEO of General Electric, said on Twitter: "Unbelievable jobs numbers ... these Chicago guys will do anything ... can't debate so change numbers."

But the unemployment data is calculated by a government agency, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, under tight security and with no oversight or input from the White House.

Keith Hall, a former commissioner of the BLS who was appointed by President George W. Bush, said the numbers could not have been manipulated.

"It's impossible to do it and get away with it," he said. "These numbers are very trustworthy."

Economists offered reasons not to read too much into them, though. Most of the increase in employed Americans came from those who had to settle for part-time work: 582,000 more people reported that they were working part-time last month but wanted full-time jobs.

That is the biggest increase in so-called underemployed Americans since February 2009, during the depths of the Great Recession.

Economic troubles in Europe and Asia also may be taking a toll on American factories. Manufacturing employment dropped by 16,000 in September after falling by 22,000 in August.

Factory hiring had been a source of economic strength the past two years: Factory jobs rose last year at the fastest pace since 1997.

But Europe's ongoing economic crisis, along with a slowdown in China, means demand for U.S.-made goods is drying up and "the days of robust manufacturing payrolls growth are likely behind us," said Chris Jones, an economist at TD Economics.

The unemployment rate has fallen from a peak of 10 percent in October 2009. But a big part of the drop over the past three years came because so many Americans stopped looking for work, so they weren't counted as unemployed.

Some were retiring baby boomers. Others were so discouraged by the weak job market that they stopped putting out resumes.

Economists were pleased with September's drop in unemployment because it happened for the right reasons: More Americans got jobs. And the work force grew by 418,000, the most since February, suggesting people are more optimistic about finding jobs. Because 873,000 more people did find work, the number of unemployed fell by 456,000. And that decline pushed the unemployment rate down.

Arthur Nazh was not surprised to hear that the unemployment rate fell. Business has improved this year at the kiosk where he sells souvenirs at a mall in Arlington, Va.

The economy "is getting better," said Nazh, 27, who employs six people and said he plans to vote for Obama because the economy needs more time to heal. "People are starting to buy more, spend more money."

Obama and Romney campaigned Friday in Nazh's home state and others that could tip to either candidate and determine the outcome of the election. Romney released three ads, mostly focused on jobs.

"These are tough times in this community," Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, told a rally outside a construction equipment store in Abingdon, Va. "We're going to bring back jobs and bring back America."

At a campaign stop in Cleveland, Obama declared: "We are moving forward again."

"Today's news should give us some encouragement," the president told thousands at Cleveland State University. "It shouldn't be an excuse for the other side to try to talk down the economy just to try to score a few political points."

The political back-and-forth over the unemployment numbers underscored the centrality of jobs to the election after a year in which the economy has been difficult to read.

The job market got off to a strong start in 2012. Employers added an average 226,000 jobs the first three months of the year.

Hiring in January, February and March was probably even stronger than that: The Labor Department has said 386,000 more jobs were created in the year that ended in March, but it has not assigned the jobs to specific months yet.

Job growth slowed sharply to an average 67,000 a month from April through June. And the weakness appeared to have continued into the summer, raising fears that a slow and steady economic recovery was losing momentum.

But the revisions to the July and August figures on Friday eased those fears somehwat. Monthly job growth was back up to an average 146,000 from July through September.

Naroff, the economist, predicted that unemployment would inch back up, and that job growth would settle at about 150,000 per month for the next several months. Economists at PNC Financial Services Group predict job growth will accelerate to 170,000 per month in 2013.

The economy is still far from full health. The number of U.S. jobs peaked in January 2008, a month after the Great Recession officially started, at 138 million. The job market shed 8.8 million jobs by February 2010. Since then, the economy has regained 4.6 million, or a little more than half, of those lost jobs.

No incumbent president since Gerald Ford in 1976 has faced re-election when the unemployment rate was as high as September's 7.8 percent, even after the sharp drop from August. Ford lost to Jimmy Carter.

Ronald Reagan faced 7.2 percent unemployment in 1984 and trounced Walter Mondale to win a second term.

When Should I Call a Physical Therapist? :: PTpittsburgh.com

When you have a health concern, a physical therapist isn?t usually your first call. As a physical therapist, it pains me to admit this, but it is the truth.

But that is why this blog exists! To help people understand that physical therapists play an important role in healthcare. Injuries heal quicker, people learn to walk again, and people live healthier lives today because of physical therapy! It is a great service.

Unfortunately, people who have not personally experienced the benefits of physical therapy, don?t really think about it until it is suggested to them by a physician or surgeon.

In Pennsylvania, we have Direct Access laws that allow patients to contact and see physical therapists without a referral from a doctor. This is a great law and empowers you to take control of your health and get better quicker.

If you are experiences any or similar symptoms to those below, give a physical therapist a call and start your rehabilitation.

Denver Broncos vs New England Patriots: Where to Watch Live Online Stream, Betting Odds, Prediction, and Preview for Sunday?s NFL Game

The game begins at 4:25 p.m. EDT and will be shown by CBS, or watch a live stream online by purchasing NFL Sunday Ticket Max.

The Broncos hope their change at quarterback will bring a much better result than when they last faced New England in last season?s 45-10 playoff rout with Tim Tebow under center.

Manning and Denver avoided a three game losing streak by shutting out the Oakland Raiders in the second half of their 37-6 victory last week. Manning went 30-for-38 for three scores, including a 17-yard strike to receiver Eric Decker and a 14-yard pass to running back Lance Ball in Denver?s 21-point third quarter.

Willis McGahee contributed 112 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, and the Denver defense only allowed 56 Oakland rushing yards.

Such a dominant performance is unlikely against a Patriots team hot off a 52-28 win over the Buffalo Bills, in which New England had two receivers and two running backs with more than 100 yards.

The Patriots were down 21-7 after Buffalo receiver Donald Jones caught a 68-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick with 11:08 left in the third quarter, but responded with 45-7 run.

Brady went 22-for-36 for 340 yards and three touchdowns, rookie running back Stevan Ridley gained 106 yards and two scores, and receiver Wes Welker have nine receptions for 129 yards.

New England did lose two of three fumbles, but cornerback Devin McCourty picked off two of the Patriots four interceptions on the day.

Betting Odds: New England is favored by 7 points; Over/Under: 51.5 points

Prediction: When these future Hall of Fame quarterbacks meet games typically come down to the wire and Sunday should be no exception. Expect a high scoring affair and the team that wins will score on the final possession of the game. New England appears to have right the ship and should walk away with a victory.

Predicted Score: New England 35, Denver 27

Billionaire claims surprise victory in Georgia poll

Georgy Abdaladze / AP

Billionaire and opposition leader Bidzina Ivanishvili, left, and his wife Ekaterine Khvedelidze pray in a church in Tbilisi, Georgia, on Monday.

By Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

Updated at 1:30 p.m. ET:?One of the world?s richest businessmen claimed to have inflicted a surprise narrow defeat on the incumbent pro-Western party in Monday?s elections in Georgia, a key ally of the United States neighboring Russia.

Billionaire tycoon-turned-politician Bidzina Ivanishvili claimed his opposition political alliance Georgian Dream had staged a remarkable upset and was heading for control of the former Soviet republic's parliament.

However, incumbent President Mikheil Saakashvili insisted his United National Movement was on course to retain power.

Reports said thousands of Georgian Dream supporters had gathered in the capital, Tbilisi, as the polls closed at 8 p.m. local time (12 p.m. ET). AFP journalist Paul Gypteau wrote on Twitter that the capital's?Freedom Square was full with "cheering" people, while International Young Democrat Union?observer Katrina Rice posted pictures showing crowds in the streets.

Rival claims could open the way to a post-election standoff. Any instability would worry the West because of the Caucasus country's role as a conduit for Caspian Sea energy supplies to Europe and its pivotal location between Russia, Iran, Turkey and Central Asia.

Ivanishvili, 56, is a once-reclusive investor and philanthropist listed by Forbes as the 153rd richest person alive having made a fortune, estimated at $6 billion, from investments across the border in Russia.

Voters on Monday chose between him and Saakashvili, a pro-Western leader who swept to the presidency after the bloodless Rose Revolution of 2003 and fought a five-day war with Russia in 2008.

The new parliament?s 150 seats consist of 73 directly-elected constituency representatives and 77 nominees allocated from party lists based on overall share of the popular vote.

Denis Sinyakov / Reuters

View some of the troop movements, destruction and refugees from the Georgia-Russia crisis.

Reuters reported that one exit poll predicted Georgian Dream was ahead in the constituency vote while the UNM said it believed it had done well in individual constituencies.

Nicholas Clayton, editor of Kanal PIK TV English in Tbilisi, posted on Twitter that early exit polls were so far in the opposition's favor.

Living in a palatial $50 million glass residence overlooking Tbilisi, Ivanishvili previously used his wealth - equivalent to half the GDP of the country he hopes to run - to support local arts and culture before deciding to enter politics. His supporters say?Saakashvili?s regime remains undemocratic despite post-Soviet-era reforms, with undue government pressure on courts and control of the media. Video footage showing the abuse and rape of inmates at a prison in the capital, Tbilisi, has boosted the alliance.

Kremlin stooge?
Along with supporters, he has been pressing his case in Washington by spending more than $1 million in recent months on a U.S. lobbying campaign, according to a Washington Post report citing disclosure records.

Saakashvili, 44, argues voters should choose the West-leaning agenda ? it has close relations with NATO - and his supporters accuse Ivanishvili of being a Kremlin stooge that would allow the former Soviet outpost to be dominated by Russia.

Voting in the election, which got under way at 12 a.m. ET, was brisk, with lines forming outside several polling stations in the capital Tbilisi, a Reuters correspondent observed.

David Mdzinarishvili / Reuters

Georgia's President Mikheil Saakashvili talks to the media at a polling station during the parliamentary election in Tbilisi on Monday.

"Besides being a contest for parliament, it is also a shadow leadership election," said Thomas de Waal, a Caucasus expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington. He said the vote "marks a turning point for Georgia".

The Washington Post on Monday said?Saakashvili was facing "a serious challenge" and described the electon as "deeply polarizing."

The West wants a stable Georgia because of its role as a conduit for Caspian Sea energy supplies to Europe and its pivotal location between Russia, Iran, Turkey and Central Asia.

"Political leaders should be chosen through the ballot box and not on the streets," parliamentary delegation heads from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Council of Europe, NATO and the European Parliament said on Saturday.

"The most important thing is that those who are dissatisfied should not create disorder," said voter Yelena Kvlividze, 45.

The prison abuse video, aired on two channels opposed to Saakashvili including one owned by Ivanishvili, has undermined the president's image as a reformer who imposed the rule of law and rooted out post-Soviet corruption.

"I'm voting against violence and abuse - how can I do otherwise after what we have all seen on TV?" Natela Zhorzholia, 68, said outside a polling station at a school in the capital, Tbilisi. She said she would vote for Georgian Dream.

Ivanishvili hopes the scandal will convince swing voters that Saakashvili has become an undemocratic leader who tramples on rights and freedoms.?

Human Rights Watch also said Wednesday that Saakashvili's?government had used 90-day prison sentences against protesters and political activists, a situation it said ?violates the country?s international commitments to safeguard against arbitrary detention?. Earlier this year, it issued a report slating the lack of due process and fair trial rights for those accused of ?administrative offenses? such as minor breaches of public order.

'Peace and stability'
Many Georgians just want political and economic stability. The economy, hit by the 2008 war and the global financial crisis, has been growing again since 2010 but inflation is likely to hit 6-7 percent this year.

"I voted for peace and stability," said Georgy Ugrekhelidze, 76. "I want this government to carry out what it has started."

Elected in 2004 after the Rose Revolution protests toppled president Eduard Shevardnadze, a former Soviet foreign minister, Saakashvili cultivated close ties with Europe and the U.S. and sought to bring Georgia into NATO.

He curbed police bribe-taking, made frequent power outages a thing of the past and presided over an economic resurgence. But opponents say he has curtailed democracy, persecuting opponents, and he faces criticism for leading Georgia into the 2008 war with Moscow in which Russian forces routed his army.

In a recent analysis of the campaign, Shaun Walker of the U.K.'s Independent newspaper wrote:

Saakashvili's people talk of a thriving democracy knocking on Europe's door, with the old Soviet mentality erased by efficient reforms and replaced with an effervescent meritocracy. Ivanishvili's brigade declare Georgia a totalitarian state, controlled by a ruthless cartel of a few men around Saakashvili who have scooped up all the economic and political resources for themselves, control the majority of media and are painfully sensitive to even the smallest criticism. The truth, unsurprisingly, is somewhere between the two extremes.

In a blog posted on the Financial Times website, Georgia analyst?Michael Cecire observed?that?Saakashvili's reforms have turned Georgia from one of the most corrupt of the ex-Soviet regimes to the least in the space of less than a decade through measures such as the decision in 2005 to sack the entire traffic police force and replace it with university graduates.?

Georgia is one of 15 former republics of the Soviet Union that gained independence when country the fell apart in 1991. The Soviet collapse ended nearly two centuries of almost continuous dominance of Georgia by Russia and the Soviet Union.?

Tension with Russia erupted into a five-day war in August 2008, when Saakashvili's government launched an offensive on South Ossetia. Russian forces drove Georgian forces out of the region and penetrated deep into Georgia before withdrawing.?

Zinc deficiency mechanism linked to aging, multiple diseases

ScienceDaily (Oct. 1, 2012) ? A new study has outlined for the first time a biological mechanism by which zinc deficiency can develop with age, leading to a decline of the immune system and increased inflammation associated with many health problems, including cancer, heart disease, autoimmune disease and diabetes.

The research was done by scientists in the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University and the OSU College of Public Health and Human Sciences. It suggests that it's especially important for elderly people to get adequate dietary intake of zinc, since they may need more of it at this life stage when their ability to absorb it is declining.

About 40 percent of elderly Americans and as many as two billion people around the world have diets that are deficient in this important, but often underappreciated micronutrient, experts say.

The study was published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, based on findings with laboratory animals. It found that zinc transporters were significantly dysregulated in old animals. They showed signs of zinc deficiency and had an enhanced inflammatory response even though their diet supposedly contained adequate amounts of zinc.

When the animals were given about 10 times their dietary requirement for zinc, the biomarkers of inflammation were restored to those of young animals.

"The elderly are the fastest growing population in the U.S. and are highly vulnerable to zinc deficiency," said Emily Ho, an LPI principal investigator. "They don't consume enough of this nutrient and don't absorb it very well."

"We've previously shown in both animal and human studies that zinc deficiency can cause DNA damage, and this new work shows how it can help lead to systemic inflammation," Ho said.

"Some inflammation is normal, a part of immune defense, wound healing and other functions," she said. "But in excess, it's been associated with almost every degenerative disease you can think of, including cancer and heart disease. It appears to be a significant factor in the diseases that most people die from."

As a result of this and what is now know about zinc absorption in the elderly, Ho said that she would recommend all senior citizens take a dietary supplement that includes the full RDA for zinc, which is 11 milligrams a day for men and 8 milligrams for women. Zinc can be obtained in the diet from seafood and meats, but it's more difficult to absorb from grains and vegetables -- a particular concern for vegetarians.

"We found that the mechanisms to transport zinc are disrupted by age-related epigenetic changes," said Carmen Wong, an OSU research associate and co-author of this study. "This can cause an increase in DNA methylation and histone modifications that are related to disease processes, especially cancer. Immune system cells are also particularly vulnerable to zinc deficiency."

Research at OSU and elsewhere has shown that zinc is essential to protect against oxidative stress and help repair DNA damage. In zinc deficiency, the risk of which has been shown to increase with age, the body's ability to repair genetic damage may be decreasing even as the amount of damage is going up.

Medical tests to determine zinc deficiency are rarely done, scientists say, and are not particularly accurate even if they are done. The best approach is to assure adequate intake of the nutrient through diet or supplements, they said, especially in the elderly.

Even though elderly people have less success in absorbing zinc, the official RDA for them is the same as in younger adults. That issue should be examined more closely, Ho said.

Levels of zinc intake above 40 milligrams per day should be avoided, researchers said, because at very high levels they can interfere with absorption of other necessary nutrients, including iron and copper.

These studies were supported by the National Institutes of Health and other agencies.
