Romney tries to distinguish Afghan policy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is trying to distinguish his Afghan policy from that of President Barack Obama.

Romney tells ABC News in a Sunday interview that he supports Obama's plan to pull U.S. troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014. But he doesn't agree with Obama's plan to order 23,000 troops out by Sept. 30, a timeline some military experts warn could complicate next year's efforts to stabilize the war-torn country.

The former Massachusetts governor says his position could change depending on the counsel of military commanders. He says he's leaving open the possibility of keeping combat troops in Afghanistan beyond 2014 should conditions change.

Romney is in Israel as part of his first overseas trip as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

Pro Wrestling Evolution EVO Spotlight Vol. 10 ft. Joe Black | The ...

?

?

Welcome back, Once again to the Pro Wrestling Evolution ?EVO Spotlight? In this 10th edition we go in depth with one of the top stars in EVO?s No rules, Limitless, and electrifying SuperHEX division. The Spotlight is on???..

?The Black Cloud? Joe Black

?

Hometown: ?I was born in Sacramento, California, although I really just consider that to be a ?birthplace? rather than call it my hometown. I was raised in many places, due to being an Air Force brat. Being all these places helped mold me into the person I was to become. I consider Frankfurt, Germany; Biloxi, Mississippi; and Greensboro, North Carolina to be my hometowns.?

Trained By: Jeff Rudd, Brass Munkey/Walter Eaton, Arik Royal, Roy Wilkins, and Matt Smith

?

How did you get started in Wrestling?? ?I remember working 3rd shift at Wal-Mart in Greensboro with Arik(Royal). Our first conversation was about Shawn Michaels, that?s when I discovered he was an avid wrestling fan who also had dreams of becoming a wrestler. We would work matches in the aisles, and subject the rest of the 3rd shift crew to wrestling for an hour in the breakroom during lunch. That was 2006, fast forward to 2008, I remember riding with Arik to CWF in Burlington when he met Jeff Rudd, to discuss training. I was still hung up about my size so I stayed in the car feeling inadequate. And our first CWF show came in April of 2008 at Sumner Civitan in Greensboro, North Carolina. Arik started training shortly after that, and every Wednesday and Sunday I was there, soaking up everything I saw. I swept the floors, cleaned the bathrooms, set up chairs and the tent at our old facility, set up rings and broke them down all? before I even started training. I just wanted to belong. I started training properly the next year (2009) and while I was training I was a referee. I did that for a year and a half, until provoked by Gemini Kid, for my ?questionable decisions? and bias as a referee. I made my debut in October of 2010, at the annual CWF Rumble.?

?

Wrestling Influences: ? I hate to sound long-winded, but this section will be quite large. I was raised off of wrestling, my father and Grandfather respectively, always had me in front of the TV whenever WCW/WWE was broadcast. The first real memory I have of wrestling was a particular match, actually recorded by my grandmother.? It was Survivor Series, 11/27/1991, and I was the biggest Hulk Hogan mark ever. I had the shirt, the wrestling buddy, the action figures, the whole nine. Hogan was going up against The Undertaker that night, and I remember running out of the room, distraught and in tears, when Hogan lost. I had just witnessed the fall of my hero, even though I would slowly start to absolutely idolize The Undertaker, that night I hated his guts and refused to watch wrestling for awhile. I know a lot of wrestlers won?t admit it, but Hogan, was what drew me into the world of Wrestling. What four year old didn?t love Hogan? My grandfather loved Ric Flair,? so I came to love Ric Flair.? As a kid Hogan, Macho Man, Flair, and ?Taker were my first influences, as in they always enamored me so much I made sure to never miss a show.?As I grew older, and realized that this was what I wanted to do, my attention shifted to ?smaller? guys. Rey Mysterio and Psychosis were amazing to me, as were Dean Malenko and Eddie Guerrero. I remember quite vividly a match I saw between Chris Benoit and Booker T, the best of 7 series, and even though Booker T was one of my all time favorites, something about Benoit drew me in. The intensity, the fire, he made everything seem as if it was done with the utmost feeling of urgency. I believed every chop, every snap suplex, every german, every diving headbutt. He was, despite what some may say, the greatest to me and still is. Benoit is the one that made this seem like a viable option to me.?

Favorite Opponent(s):? ?I have quite a few,? My first singles match was against one my mentors, my first wrestling mentor, The KamaKazi Kid. We?ve had matches at Ryder?s, TCW, Power Pro, the list goes on. From each match I learned valuable lessons, as well as being dropped on my head quite a few times. Brass Munkey/Walter Eaton is the same sentiment, these two guys took me under their wings.?Also KC Mcknight, we only worked one match but that one match lit a fire up under my ass to stop being ok with ?good? and aspire for great. Anytime I get in there with Ben Tyler, Trevor Lee or a combination of the two is always fun. And also Chiva Kid. Ric Converse, and Marcellus King.

?

Favorite Matches:(You have been involved in) ?The match with KC, the tag match of BlackSmith against the Dawson?s (learned how to work through an injury), Kazi at Ryder?s, Chiva and I against the Fun Athletic Guys at Pro Wrestling EVO Follow This, and Chiva at PWEvo Live and In Stereo on Ippv.?

Favorite Matches:(You weren?t involved in) KC Mcknight vs. Louis Moore, Kazi vs. Ric Converse vs. Brass Munkey at Battlecade X,? Triple Threat match at WrestleMania 20 between Benoit, HHH, and Shawn Michaels, and Dean Malenko vs Eddy Guerrero their last ECW match.

?

Promotions Worked: CWF Mid-Atlantic, TCW, Power Pro Wrestling, Pure Pro Wrestling, AIWF, Pro Wrestling Xperience, NWA Main Event(Nashville), Coastal Plains Wrestling, Pro Wrestling Evo, UWC, RCW, SCWA, Firestar Pro Wrestling. Along with promotions in Lexington, Thomasville, and Atlanta. ?I?m sure there?s some I?m missing, but those are the ones I remember at the moment.?

?

Titles Held: The Rising Generation League(RGL) Championship for CWF Mid-Atlantic, and currently Tag Team Champions in Atlanta with Cedric Alexander.

?

Any thoughts you have on PWEvo or it?s Talents:?Evo has the best roster of talent on the east coast. Guys who have wrestled in a variety of places, bringing all of their knowledge and collective hunger to one place. I?ve had easily the best matches of my career there, I?ve gotten exposure from our first iPPv, and feel that everything I was taught from CWF has given me a certain edge in Evo. As far as specifics go, I think Chiva is the best high flyer on the east coast, even though he dealt me defeat, I can still man up and say he?s one of the greatest talents I?ve been able to work with. Myself and Arik Royal have history, and if ever we clash, we will undoubtedly steal the show.? I?ve always had a vast amount of respect for Marcellus(King), Chip(Day) and Corey(Hollis). And we can?t forget Cedric.. That?s a story for another time..?

Year in Review:? Joe Black was named one of the competitors in Pro Wrestling Evo?s first SuperHEX division in January of 2012. This 8 month long competition will wrap up in August but Black made sure to keep his name at the top of the leaderboard for many of those eight months. ?The Black Cloud? earned 4 points being outlasted by only one man in the inaugural 6 man SuperHEX match at EVO Eight 2012 which is to date one of the wildest and best matches in the company?s history. Black next met, and defeated Ben Tyler at ?EPIC? in March 2012 earning another 3 points and the lead in the SuperHEX division. He continued to sacrifice his body for a shot at SuperHEX gold at April?s ?Vive La Evolucion? in a brutal 4 way against Chiva Kid, Kirby Mack, and Robyn Golphin, a match ultimately won by Kirby Mack. The end result of that match set up a? tie between Black and Chiva to see who would face Mack for the first SuperHEX championship in August 2012. Live & In Stereo PWEvo?s first Ippv in June was the date that match took place and Black & Chiva did anything and everything to put one another away. The SuperHEX championship was so close for Joe, but in the end it was Chiva who claimed that final spot. As you can see from his comments Joe Black is far from finished and accepts challenges from all comers with the ultimate goal to get better each time and achieve domination. You can see that quest continue in August at ?This Is Wrestling? as Joe goes one on one with another young SuperHEX talent ?Relentless? Robyn Golphin. The sky is the limit for this intense? athlete and there seems to be nothing that can stoke the fire that burns in ?The Black Cloud? Joe Black.

?

2012 Mission Statement: ?This is the part where I shun humility, and get down to the meat of what makes me, well, me. Any person in this business, who is complacent, or content, with where they are now have already lost to me. I tear my body to shit, and I love it, but I do with purpose, with my mind centered of a singular goal. KC(McKnight) told me, ?If you don?t consider yourself the best, why the fuck are you in this business?? That?s my mantra for 2012 and beyond. This will be the year the world takes heed to ?The Black Cloud? and I put any and all wrestlers, on notice, I seek to be the best, and I?ll die in pursuit of that ideal. I want every championship, every accolade, I want all eyes on me, I want all the girls to drip at the sight of me. I want a lot of things, and what separates me from the rest, I intend of getting them all.. At any cost

Thank you to Joe Black for taking time to participate in this feature. You can catch Joe in action anytime as all the matches mentioned above are available at www.evoondemand.com and for updates on his future matches visit www.prowrestlingevo.com and follow him on twitter @blackcloudJB for other appearances.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of just 1.5 percent from April through June, as Americans cut back sharply on spending. The slowdown in growth adds to worries that the economy could be stalling three years after the recession ended.

The Commerce Department also said Friday that the economy grew a little better than previously thought in the January-March quarter. It raised its estimate to a 2 percent rate, up from 1.9 percent.

Growth at or below 2 percent isn't enough to lower the unemployment rate, which was 8.2 percent last month. And most economists don't expect growth to pick up much in the second half of the year. Europe's financial crisis and a looming budget crisis in the U.S. are expected to slow business investment further.

"The main take away from today's report, the specifics aside, is that the U.S. economy is barely growing," said Dan Greenhaus, chief economic strategist at BTIG LLC. "Along with a reduction in the actual amount of money companies were able to make, it's no wonder the unemployment rate cannot move lower."

Some economic data improved over the course of the April-June quarter, while others worsened. Hiring, for example, rose slightly from April to May to June. But home sales weakened.

Stocks opened higher as investors appeared to shrug off the weak U.S growth and focus on a pledge from the European Central Bank president to keep the euro together. The Dow Jones industrial average was up about 70 points in late-morning trading, and broader indexes also rose.

The lackluster economy is raising pressure on President Barack Obama in his re-election fight with Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

But few think the Fed, the White House or Congress can or will do anything soon that might rejuvenate the economy quickly. Many lawmakers, for example, refuse to increase federal spending in light of historically large budget deficits.

Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said that the sluggish second-quarter growth rate is probably not weak enough to trigger more action by the Federal Reserve when it meets next week.

Many economists, however, believe the Fed will launch another round of bond buying at its September policy meeting. The aim is to drive long-term interest rates lower and encourage more borrowing and spending.

Glenn Hubbard, economic adviser for Romney, said Friday's report on growth was largely what economists were expecting. "But those expectations themselves and the report itself were actually quite disappointing," he noted.

"At that pattern, the economy simply will never return to full employment," he said.

Alan Krueger, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, said the report showed the economy grew for the 12th straight quarter.

Congress could strengthen growth and job creation by adopting President Barack Obama's plan to extend expiring tax cuts for all but the wealthiest Americans, Krueger said.

Republicans want the tax cuts extended for all Americans.

The 1.5 percent growth rate in the second quarter was the weakest since the economy, as measured by the gross domestic product, expanded at a 1.3 percent rate in the July-September quarter last year. GDP measures the country's total output of goods and services, from the purchase of a cup of coffee to the sale of fighter jets.

Current-dollar GDP increased at an annual rate of $117.6 billion in the second quarter to $15.6 trillion.

Growth was weaker mostly because consumer spending slowed to a growth rate of just 1.5 percent. That's down from 2.4 percent in the first quarter. Americans bought fewer autos, computers and other long-lasting manufactured goods. Spending on services increased.

They also saved more. The savings rate increased to 4 percent, up from 3.6 percent in the first quarter.

Consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of economic activity, was offset somewhat by a slightly smaller drag from the government. Spending by governments fell at an annual rate of 1.4 percent in the second quarter, just half of the 3 percent rate of decline in the first quarter.

The Commerce Department also revised its growth estimates for the past three years. Those revisions showed that the economy contracted 3.1 percent in 2009, slightly less than the 3.5 percent previously reported. Growth in 2010 was put at 2.4 percent, down from 3 percent, with growth in 2011 at 1.8 percent instead of 1.7 percent.

The U.S. economy has never been so sluggish this long into a recovery. The Great Recession officially ended in June 2009.

Until a few weeks ago, many economists had been predicting that growth would accelerate in the final six months of the year. They pointed to gains in manufacturing, home and auto sales and lower gas prices.

But threats to the U.S. economy have left consumers too anxious to spend freely. Jobs are tight. Pay isn't keeping up with inflation. Retail sales fell in June for a third straight month. Manufacturing has weakened in most areas of the country.

Fear is also growing that the economy will fall off a "fiscal cliff" at year's end. That's when tax increases and deep spending cuts will take effect unless Congress reaches a budget agreement.

All that is making companies reluctant to expand and hire much.

Asian-American soldier faced punishment before he shot himself, trial told

FORT BRAGG, North Carolina (Reuters) - A Chinese-American soldier in Afghanistan was forced to crawl about 50 yards (meters) as punishment while his superiors yelled and hurled rocks at him hours before he took his own life, a fellow soldier testified on Friday in a court-martial hearing.

Private Danny Chen killed himself by a gunshot in a guard tower in southern Afghanistan last October.

One of his superiors, Sergeant Adam Holcomb, is standing trial in Fort Bragg on allegations his physical mistreatment and racial harassment pushed Chen to commit suicide.

Holcomb, 30, has pleaded not guilty and faces nearly 18 years of confinement and a dishonorable discharge if convicted on charges that include negligent homicide.

On Friday, Holcomb's defense lawyers called a dozen witnesses in an attempt to shift the focus from his conduct to what some described as Chen's shortcomings as a soldier.

The soldiers described harsh conditions at the remote combat outpost where stress ran high, politically incorrect nicknames were used and soldiers endured physical discipline when they failed to measure up.

A service member who served with Chen, Specialist Nicholas Sepeda, said Chen was not physically fit when he arrived in Afghanistan and their superiors frequently put him through "corrective training" involving push-ups, squats and other harsher measures.

He described the scene of Chen being forced to crawl to a guard tower while several non-commissioned officers threw rocks at him and yelled, "Incoming!"

"I didn't think it was right they were throwing rocks at him," Sepeda said.

On one occasion, Holcomb pulled Chen out of his bunk and dragged him across sharp rocks, lacerating his back, Sepeda said. Sepeda took photographs of the injuries.

"He was treated like dirt, wasn't he?" a military prosecutor asked Sepeda on cross-examination. "Yes he was," Sepeda replied.

But Sepeda said non-commissioned officers at the outpost disciplined or "smoked" other solders, including himself.

Sepeda said he did not think Chen was targeted for harassment as much as he initially thought immediately after Chen's suicide.

'HAD TO PROD HIM TO LEARN'

Sergeant William Zade, another defense witness, said Chen often showed up late for guard duty and frequently fell asleep in the guard tower and could not be trusted to go out on patrols.

"Basic skills ? he was deficient in all of them," Zade said. "We had to prod him to learn."

Specialist Zachary Bolin, a medic assigned to the outpost, said anytime he saw Chen being disciplined, he thought there was a reason for it.

Bolin said he heard Chen referred to as "dragon lady."

Holcomb is accused of using racial slurs and failing to stop his subordinates from using similar offensive language.

"It was just a nickname," Bolin said. "It wasn't said with anger or disrespect."

Private First Class Timothy Carner described what he called bizarre behavior by Chen, including a time when Chen chose to sleep in a portable toilet.

"I asked him about it," Carner said. "He didn't feel like he deserved to sleep in a bed, so he went and slept in a port a-potty. I felt it was a very strange decision to make."

Holcomb's lawyers plan to call three more defense witness on Saturday, the fifth day of the trial.

Seven of Chen's other superiors from the Alaska-based 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, are also charged in the case and will be tried separately.

Gender Composition of Boards Important for ... - Business Ethics

by Beth Brooke
Global Vice Chair of Public Policy, Ernst & Young

Corporate America often says we are facing a pipeline problem when challenged with the troubling reality that women occupy only 16 percent of?Fortune 500?board seats. Yet to bump the percentage of U.S. board seats filled by women up by one percentage point, it would only take about 50 women joining the boards of these companies. There is no doubt there are far more than 50 qualified women interested in U.S. board seats right now.

Despite a professed desire by many U.S. companies for greater diversity and female representation, there has been virtually no improvement in recent years in the senior ranks. In the meantime, on goes the brain drain ? as senior women are now being competitively recruited to serve on the boards of non-U.S.-based companies.

The situation is urgent. U.S.-headquartered companies are failing to meet the career needs of half their available highly skilled labor and falling behind international competitors that are taking aggressive action to increase the number of women on their boards. That is the central finding of a new report,?Fulfilling the Promise: How More Women on Corporate Boards Would Make America and American Companies More Competitive, from the business-led Committee for Economic Development (CED).

Corporate leaders must actively commit to make advancement decisions that take advantage of the power of diverse views from leaders who don?t think, act or look like themselves. That will require diligently breaking old habits of selection that still favor those similar to existing leadership at the top. Nominating committees need to re-examine the narrow selection criteria that often exclude those who have not served in a CEO role. For example, it has been reported that of the 78 women currently serving as CFOs of?Fortune 1000?companies, 53 are not currently serving on any outside board. This is a uniquely qualified group.?The CEOs of these companies can take a critical step forward by advocating for their female CFOs to serve on outside boards.

Fulfilling the Promise?highlights the key realities facing the market for women in top corporate roles and makes two critical recommendations:

Key Realities:

??Gender Composition of Corporate Boards is Important for Global Competiveness.?Women constitute a substantial portion of highly talented labor ? women have caught up to and surpassed men in attaining bachelor?s and master?s degrees, yet top corporate leadership does not reflect that fact.

? Existing Efforts Do Not Yield Enough Progress.?Current efforts are not working ? the percentage of women on all U.S. corporate boards has been stuck well below 13 percent for a decade.

? Supply Challenges.?Board nominating committees often say that the small number of women on boards is due to the small number of perceived qualified candidates. The CED report casts doubt on that viewpoint. Companies must examine how to get more qualified candidates in the pipeline.

? Nominating Committees Do Not Do Enough To Demand Women Candidates.?While researchers have not found overt bias in the board nomination process, the system currently appears tilted toward maintaining boards in the male-dominated form familiar to the business world.

? Supply and Demand Problems Will Not Fix Themselves: Active Solutions Are Needed.?An aggressive effort is needed by all U.S. companies to improve female representation on corporate boards. The status quo is not acceptable.

Recommendations:

1. Meet the Competitive Challenge.?As their colleagues in Australia, the U.K. and elsewhere have done, CED members challenge leaders of U.S. companies to examine their practices against the best in class; they should ask what they are doing to advance women within their own companies and onto the boards of others, and they should be transparent in setting targets and measuring results.

2. Advocate for Talented Women.?Companies must employ all possible solutions to raise the number of women on corporate boards. That includes: setting goals; targeting talented women for promotion; publicly reporting targets and recruitment efforts voluntarily; providing active sponsorship programs for women; and employing executive search firms to increase the pool of women corporate board candidates.

Conclusion

America?s business leaders should understand that they need to use all available talent to succeed in today?s competitive global markets, and such talent increasingly will come from women. America?s adaptability and cultural diversity have historically been sources of significant strength in its economic development. Compared to many other countries, particularly in Europe and Asia, the United States has gained from its ability to integrate culturally diverse groups into positions where they could contribute significantly to economic growth and development. Women, too, have been integrated into the workforce in unprecedented numbers. Despite these gains, the potential is much greater. The United States is not yet a global leader in creating opportunities for women ? it has ample room for improvement.

Comp Costs ? Part 1 - Heffernan Insurance Home Health Care

Owning or helping to operate a home health care agency, whether it?s for profit or not for profit, involves gaining some insight about workers? compensation costs. When claims get out of control, it?s time to re-evaluate. There are steps your organization can take to manage claims more efficiently, which could impact the cost.

Here are just a few to consider:

  • Request a dedicated adjuster ? Home health care agencies with a small number to a large number of workers? comp claims may want to ask that one adjuster be dedicated to handling their claims. Of course, that adjuster may have other companies on his or her caseload. The benefits of working with one adjuster is that he or she will get to know your agency, types of claims, your return-to-work program, and preferred medical providers, which could expedite the handling of claims, thus lowering costs.
  • Consider hiring a claims auditor ? Hiring an outside auditor to look at the way claims are filed and managed could help identify any weaknesses in the process that could be tweaked in order to improve the efficiency of claims handling.
  • Maintain frequent communication with employees injured ? In order to prevent a claim from turning into a legal battle, it?s important to remain in communication with injured employees. Make sure there?s a process to enable efficient communication between you (the employer) and the employee. Answering employees? questions up front could prevent the fear that sometimes leads to hiring an attorney, and incurring even more costs for your home health care firm.

These are just a few ways to help lower home health care workers? compensation costs. Ideally, your agency should have and maintain a beneficial relationship with your workers? comp insurance provider. The insurance agents at Heffernan Insurance Brokers specialize in maintaining these types of relationships with their home health care, hospice, assisted living, nursing home, and senior care clients.
