Running Of The Bulls 2012: 2 Injured In Pamplona On San Fermin's Second Day

PAMPLONA, Spain -- Bulls thundered into and trampled several thrill-seeking runners as they raced down the dew-slicked cobblestone streets of Pamplona on Sunday during the second day of the weeklong San Fermin bull-running festival but no one was gored, officials said.

The second San Fermin feast day is usually one of the most crowded and traditionally features bulls from the Miura breeding ranch, some of Spain's largest and most fearsome fighting animals.

The festivities were made famous by Ernest Hemingway's 1926 novel "The Sun Also Rises."

While many runners suffered minor cuts and bruises, only two persons received medical treatment, one for a bruised back and another for facial contusions, a Navarre regional government statement said.

Early on, a 640 kilogram (1,411 pounds) bull called Navajito, raced ahead of the pack and charged into runners, at one point lifting two which had become caught between the points of its horns but causing no serious injury.

"There were so many people you could barely see the bulls," said Andrew Chavey, 49, from South Carolina but currently working as a contractor with Lockheed Martin in Afghanistan. "It was so fast, and you're almost more afraid of being run over by the crowd of people than the actual bulls, but it was fun."

Some 4,000 revelers took part in the run, San Fermin experts on state broadcaster TVE said.

"It was awesome, fast, overwhelming, extreme and unique," said engineer Ryan Thiel, 33, from New Orleans.

The festival in this northern city dates back to the late 16th century and is also known for its all-night street parties.

The 928 yards (850 meters) runs take place at 8 a.m. daily and are intended to take bulls from stables just outside the city's northern medieval walls to a central bullring where the animals face matadors in the afternoon of each of the feast days.

Despite the Miura's size and musclebound appearance, experts admire them for their explosive acceleration, stamina and grace, characteristics that inspired legendary Italian car maker, the late Ferruccio Lamborghini, to name one of his iconic sports cars after the breed.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Highways buckled in Illinois and Wisconsin, water use was cut back in Indiana and those who had power in the mid-Atlantic were urged to conserve it, but the heat gripping much of the country was only expected to worsen Saturday.

Temperatures of more than 100 degrees were forecast in Philadelphia, authorities warned of excessive heat in the Midwest and the power outages surpassed a week in the mid-Atlantic, where extreme heat was expected into the weekend.

A major storm in the area last week left behind damage, which combined with the high demand for power to stress the electrical system's capabilities, a Washington-area utility said. Hundreds of thousands remained without power Friday night in the Appalachians and mid-Atlantic, mostly in West Virginia.

Tens of thousands were still without power in the Midwest as well after storms there this week. Utilities hoped to restore service over the weekend in Michigan, where temperatures were forecast in the 90s.

One man in the state figured out a way to beat the heat: stay in the car.

That was the plan for 60-year-old Roger Sinclair of Batavia, Ill., who was headed home Saturday morning from Detroit, the city of his birth.

Sinclair, a dispatcher at a plumbing company's call center, visited the Motor City over the past few days to see an old friend and catch Friday night's Tigers game.

While he enjoyed the game, a 4-2 Tigers win, the conditions were less than ideal.

"It was 97 at the first pitch and still in the 80s at the time of the last out," he said. "It was tough. There was no breeze."

Before heading home Saturday, though, Sinclair wanted to see a Great Lakes ore carrier make its way through the city's waterways. So, he tracked one down the Detroit River, driving ahead of it and parking on Belle Isle, which sits in the middle of the river between the city and Windsor, Ontario.

Sinclair, standing along the riverbank and shielding his eyes from the sun, watched the Algomarine slowly head west.

"You just don't see this in Chicago," he said.

As the vessel traveled out of sight, Sinclair walked to his car.

"This is how I've dealt with it the last couple of days," he said. "A lot of time in the car."

Record temperatures were set Friday in the Indiana cities of Indianapolis, South Bend and Fort Wayne, where temperatures could reach 106 degrees but feel more like 114. In central Arkansas, Russellville reached 106 degrees, breaking a record set in 1964.

The heat was blamed for at least 23 deaths.

Nine people in Maryland have died of heat-related causes in recent days, the state said. Authorities in Chicago said heat was a factor in six deaths there, mostly among older people. Three deaths in Wisconsin and two in Tennessee were also reported to be heat-related.

In Ohio, a man in his 70s and two women ? one in her late 60s, the other in her 80s ? were found dead this week, said Dr. Jeff Lee, a deputy county coroner in the central part of the state. He said all three were suffering from heart disease but died from stress caused by high temperatures in their houses. Temperatures inside were stifling, recorded in the 90s in two cases, with windows shut and no ventilation. The houses lacked electricity because of recent power outages.

"If they had gotten cooling, we would have expected them to survive," he said.

Relief was on the way in the form of a cold front as the weekend ends, but forecasters expected it to bring severe weather, too.

The rain should help dry spells in many places. Much of Arkansas is enduring brown grass and seeing trees lose their green, and farmers in Ohio are growing concerned about the dry conditions, considered among the worst of the past decade.

Residents of and visitors to the tiny hamlet of Hell, Mich., had their own ways of dealing with the high temperatures.

"Every day is a good day to be in Hell," said businessman John Colone, the community's unofficial mayor, who owns a canoe and kayak rental and Scream's Ice Cream. "More people have told you to go to our town than anywhere else on Earth."

Colone said the number of people heading out on the lake recently was lower than normal.

"It's just been so hot," he said.

Still, Colone said, he's encountered a number of tourists who wanted to say they'd been to Hell on one of the hottest days of the year.

(AP) ? The spokesman for U.N. special envoy Kofi Annan says he has arrived in Damascus for talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The visit comes a day after Annan acknowledged in an interview that the international community's efforts to find a political solution to the escalating violence in Syria have failed.

Annan is the architect of the most prominent international plan to end the 16-month crisis in Syria which activists say has left well over 14,000 people dead.

Annan's six-point plan was to begin with a cease-fire in mid-April between government forces and rebels seeking to topple Assad but the truce never took hold.

A statement issued Sunday by spokesman Ahmad Fawzi did not give details of Annan's schedule in Damascus.

BitTorrent Torque alpha puts file seeds on the web, makes desktop apps look stale

Almost without fail, BitTorrent downloads have had to spread through a dedicated client, whether it's on the desktop or a router. Thankfully, BitTorrent Torque has just come in alpha form to liberate the peer download service from its software chains. All that's needed now is a web browser that can parse a JavaScript app. Going the new route gives some freedom to enable sharing that hasn't always been practical: among the tricks in the company's Torque Labs are drag-and-drop sharing, conversion of torrents into traditional downloads and easing the burden on a server for video streaming. The alpha stage leaves Torque with awhile to go before it's ready for the limelight, but experimenters can hit the source link to start tinkering with distributed file sharing today.

A postcard from Mars: NASA rover sends stunning panorama

The image is a mosaic of more than 800 photos snapped over a six-month period.

What?s a Mars rover to do when there?s not enough power to rove? Take pictures. LOTS of pictures! This wonderful new panoramic view of the Opportunity rover?s stopping place this past Mars winter, Greeley Haven, is composed of 817 images taken between Dec. 21, 2011, and May 8, 2012. It shows fresh rover tracks and the rim of an ancient impact crater, Endeavour, which awaits more explorations from Opportunity. You?ll want to click and see a bigger version of it?here.

But to get the full effect, check out this?great interactive sphere of the panorama?put together by John O?Connor of the NASATech website!
?
The images were taken with the color camera mounted on the mast of Oppy, providing a sense of sitting on top of the rover and taking in the view. This is actually a false color image, which emphasizes the difference between the materials.

?The view provides rich geologic context for the detailed chemical and mineral work that the team did at Greeley Haven over the rover?s fifth Martian winter, as well as a spectacularly detailed view of the largest impact crater that we?ve driven to yet with either rover over the course of the mission,? said Jim Bell of Arizona State University, Tempe, Pancam lead scientist.

Opportunity has recently reached a milestone: On July 2, Opportunity reached its 3,000th Martian day, or Sol. You can read a great write-up of the accomplishment at the?Road to Endeavour blog by Stu Atkinson, which includes interviews of rover drivers Scott Maxwell and Paolo Bellutta.

Stu also compiled this mosaic close-up of a RAT (Rock Abrasion Tool) hole drilled by Oppy into a rock called ?Grasburg.?

Opportunity has recently started to take short drives coming off the long Martian winter, and the team notes in the?latest update?that the rover has been benefiting from solar array dust cleaning events, which increase the daily energy production: as of Sol 3001 (July 3, 2012), the solar array energy production was 577 watt-hours. That?s great news for future drives and the longevity of the long-lived rover, which has been on Mars since 2004. Truly, Oppy is the Energizer Bunny of rovers!

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Google is phasing out a service that allows millions of people to personalize its home page with applications such as weather updates and stock quotes.

The customization service, known as iGoogle, will be turned off in November 2013. The mobile version of iGoogle will be discontinued at the end of this month.

Google Inc. disclosed its plans this week. It's being swept out as part of a periodic housecleaning that has seen Google scrap more than 30 products since co-founder Larry Page became CEO 15 months ago.

Page has been trying to sharpen Google's focus on search, advertising, video, social networking and mobile devices.

The scheduled termination of iGoogle will come eight years after Google first offered the personalization tool. It had been seen as a way to encourage people to return to Google more frequently for information they are interested in. It also encouraged more people to create Google accounts, which made it easier for the company to identify their individual interests.

The climate has changed since iGoogle started as an unbranded personal page in 2005.

These days, many people get weather and other information through applications they install on smartphones and tablet computers. People who use Google's Chrome browser can also access a variety of apps with functions offered by iGoogle.

"The need for iGoogle has eroded over time," Matt Eichner, Google's general manager of global enterprise search, wrote in a Tuesday blog post.

Google said tens of millions of people used iGoogle within its first two years of existence, making it the company's fastest-growing service in early 2007. The company hasn't disclosed more recent figures.

Besides its customization service, Google also is preparing to jettison several other products, including a little-used online video service that the company started before it bought YouTube in 2006 for $1.76 billion.

Google stopped accepting new clips on Google Video in May 2009. Later this summer, Google Video's remaining content will be transferred to YouTube. Google Video users will have until Aug. 20 to delete or transfer their clips to another location.

First, on the blueberry beer! Yummy stuff!

second, you don't eat meat for ethical reasons....well, that's why we KILL the animal BEFORE we cook it. Ethical issue solved!

your welcome.

THIRD.... Go to a mirror.....

Look at yourself....

Smile....

Smile REAL big....

Yeah, see the points on those teeth? You sure the hell don't need those to take out a carrot!
