Young Progressives Firing Up Grassroots Campaigns Across the Country

The day Carlos Odio walked down the halls of the Executive Office Building next to the White House to tell his boss he was quitting his job, he assumed he?d be delivering a shock.

Odio was deputy associate director of the White House Office of Political Affairs, where he consulted on Latino affairs, all the while knowing, he said, ?change doesn?t start in Washington.?

His supervisor was Patrick Gaspard, now executive director of the Democratic National Committee, who said he was saddened to hear that Odio would not be working on President Obama?s reelection campaign.

?But I can?t say that I was surprised,? Gaspard said. ?Carlos has an abiding passion for grassroots activism.?

Odio went on to direct the Candidate Project, an arm of the New Organizing Institute that has more than 7,800 pledges from progressives who plan to run for a political office at various levels of government in 2012. His transition from national to local politics is being mimicked by other organizations and activists?mostly young ones?across the Left.

Some of them say they grew frustrated when their top issue was hung out to dry by the gridlocked Congress; others felt called to respond to the tea party movement with their own brand of local organizing.

Odio said he had expected the energy generated by Obama?s 2008 election to bring more local liberals into politics, but reigniting that fire and passion required some grunt work on the part of organizations like his.

?You always assume someone else is doing it,? Odio said.

But they weren?t. The Candidate Project is the first of its kind to bring potential progressive candidates in touch with local party offices, funders, and organizations that can help drive their campaigns. He said he took a page from the tea party playbook and built from the bottom up, creating a decentralized network.

The Candidate Project doesn?t dictate candidates? platforms, but it hopes they will be aligned with generally progressive principles, he said.

Proponents of the Dream Act are now running a similar network. Carlos Saavedra is the national coordinator of the United We Dream Network, which ties together a group of activists who once had their sights set on a national law to grant citizenship to children of illegal immigrants through college education and service in the military. Unlike Odio, Saavedra didn?t have energy to harness after the bill was blocked in December 2010. He had pieces to pick up.

Three months after the vote, 220 leaders from pro-Dream Act organizations met in Memphis, Tenn., and essentially asked, according to Saavedra: ?What the heck do we do now??

They found their answer in legislative battles at the state level. They formed the United We Dream Network and began organizing hunger strikes, community meetings, vigils, and visits to senators in battleground states for immigrant issues. ?Mobilizing,? is how Saavedra described his strategy.

That?s the same way that many up-and-coming progressive organizations describe their approach to giving grassroots groups what they need without dictating their exact message or funding them entirely.

The Energy Action Coalition has a network 10,000 strong filled mainly with the type of young activists who have been members of groups like the Sierra Club and Greenpeace since their founding. But talk of cutting the EPA budget, starting construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, and ending subsidies to Big Oil brought local activists to Washington in droves. The coalition?s campaign director, Whit Jones, credits Washington for raising the issues that energize environmentalists, but he has seen more results on a local level.

?Things go to Congress to die,? Jones said one day after the Senate blocked a bill to end oil subsidies.

The group is responsible for closing more than 60 coal-fired power plants that operated on college campuses, an issue brought to Jones?s attention by the coalition?s student members. He calls the tea party a ?wake up call for the progressive movement,? because it forced groups like his to harness local momentum. But he argues the conservative movement was never as grassroots as it appeared because of its mega-donors like the Koch brothers, owners of one of the nation?s biggest energy companies.

Many progressive leaders say what their organizations lack in money, they must make up for in people.

That?s a lesson Charles Wowkanech, president of the New Jersey State AFL-CIO, has known for 18 years. His is a centralized, platform-specific, tried-and-true model that has yet to take root within young coalitions joining the progressive ranks today.

Wowkanech and his full-time staff target union members to run for public office and train them at schools funded by the AFL-CIO. So far, he has helped 685 union members get elected to public office, where they have passed pro-labor bills, increased the minimum wage twice, and pushed the marriage-equality bill on Republican Gov. Chris Christie.

The New Jersey group always submits its plans and results to the national AFL-CIO, Wowkanech said, and headquarters has in turn provided funding and consulting. But it was just this year that the national organization really began to take notice of the work in its New Jersey branch, he said. Wowkanech has spent the past few months traveling to Wisconsin, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts, and soon will go to Ohio to teach his strategy to other state AFL-CIO affiliates.

But Wowkanech gives this advice to his audiences: ?This is not something you can build overnight.?

Unlike Odio?s Candidate Project, the AFL-CIO ensures that the members it selects have funding, training, and a strong voter base. That?s something many of the rising progressive organizations aren?t in a position to buy, and, following the style of the Occupy movement, a centralized approach is frowned upon. Odio recognizes that some of the candidates who have signed on to run in their local elections this year may not agree with his views. But that?s a reality he has accepted.

?It takes a lot of trust,? Odio said. ?But we just believe you need more people involved to have more voices in the democracy.?

Analyst Cuts Apple Rating on Prospect of iPhone Subsidy Revolt

Now here are two words you don?t often see in the same sentence: Apple and downgrade. Yet here they are in a note from BTIG Research?s Walter Piecyk, who this morning cut his rating on the company?s shares to ?neutral? from ?buy.?

A shocker of a call, coming as it does when Apple shares are so ascendant that some analysts have slapped a staggering $1,001 price target on them. But Piecyk has his reasons, and they?re worth considering, even as AAPL shrugs them off in midday trading. Top among them: He believes Apple?s carrier partners are tired of offering such high subsidies on the iPhone, which eat into their own margins while delivering huge ones to Apple. And soon they?re going to begin reining them in.

?Subsidies by post-paid wireless operators have fueled the growth of Apple?s $600 iPhone since its inception,? says Piecyk. ?Wireless operators have been happy to subsidize smartphones to new and existing customers in order to provide a lift to the average monthly bill (ARPU) of their customer base, a metric which had been falling for the past three decades.?

But now that the pace of the smartphone upgrade cycle has quickened, subsidizing iPhone upgrades only one year into a two-year contract is becoming a costly proposition. Case in point: AT&T?s wireless margins, which used to be more than 44 percent back in 2010, are these days hovering around 30 percent. So, to raise margin levels back to where they once were, AT&T is implementing stricter upgrade policies.

?We expect post-paid wireless operators to remain firm in their plan to stunt the pace of phone upgrades in 2012 and we expect to see some initial evidence of their success in the current quarter,? Piecyk said.

And that could cause a significant contraction in iPhone sales; more so, if other carriers follow AT&T?s lead, as Piecyk believes they might.

How significant?

Says Piecyk, ?We expect Apple?s iPhone sales to drop to 27.5 million units in Fiscal Q3, resulting in a revenue estimate that is $1 billion below consensus.?

Which would obviously make for a hell of a surprise.

So what do we think of Piecyk?s rationale? Does it hold water?

Turn that New Business Into an LLC | cheap auto insurance in florida

With many companies closing shop there is an increasing trend of people starting their own businesses after previously holding regular jobs. Whether you have just started your own venture or still planning to do so, you may want to hear about the benefits of becoming an LLC.

LLC, or Limited Liability Company, is a type of business organization which is becoming very popular because of the benefits that it provides the owners.

During start-up, defining your organization type as an LLC is easier than setting it up as a sole proprietor. It is even possible to convert your organization into an LLC even if it?s already been previously set up and defined as another type of business organization.

If you have established your business as a sole proprietorship, it may have been done simply by filing a DBA (doing business as) form in your locality. You may not have had to register your business with the state. An LLC is one of the forms you can choose when registering your business.

There are advantages and disadvantages when choosing to start your company as an LLC, but the most important advantage is that it provides protection from liabilities to the owners. An LLC may borrow money for example, yet the owners would not be held liable for it in the event the business fails. The owners cannot also be held legally responsible should the business be taken to court for whatever reason.

Other benefits include pass-through taxation, which means owners still claim income or loss on their individual income tax returns; improved credibility with employees, creditors, etc.; fewer ongoing formalities and restrictions than corporations; and flexible management. Unlike corporations, LLC?s are not levied business taxes, does not have a board of directors nor does it convene board meetings.

The disadvantages of starting an LLC lie in the legalities and fees. To form an LLC, Articles of Organization have to be filed and filing fees paid in the state in which you register your business. Some states even call for annual report or franchise fees. These are free however for sole proprietorships and general partnerships and is reasonably-priced for small businesses. Ownership of an LLC is often harder to transfer because there is no stock to be sold and all owners must agree to any changes.

While you may set up an LLC with only one owner in some states, others will require at least two partners. Another disadvantage is a requirement for the payment of self-employment taxes, something you would have to do if an LLC becomes your only income anyway.

To save themselves the hassle, many people who wants to form an LLC resort to hiring lawyers for handling the legal requirements. Forms are also downloadable from the internet for those who are secure enough to comply with the process by themselves. If doing the work yourself, be sure to find forms that comply with your state and research any special requirements you may need to meet.

Mali junta, ECOWAS confirm transition deal

Mali's military junta and the West African bloc ECOWAS announced a deal that includes the lifting of sanctions and an amnesty for those involved in last month's coup.

The agreement provides a framework for a return to constitutional rule under an interim leader who will oversee democratic elections and handle the crisis in the north, where Islamists and Tuareg rebels have seized control.

It came after Mali's Tuareg rebels declared independence Friday in the north, a move rejected by the international community and the Islamist insurgents they fought beside, as fears grew of a humanitarian crisis.

The United States, Africa and Europe dismissed the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad's (MNLA's) declaration of independence.

The declaration, long a goal of Tuareg rebels, is a bid to formalise the situation on the ground.

A democratic success since its last coup 21 years ago, Mali is now roughly divided into a Tuareg rebel-controlled north and junta-controlled south.

ECOWAS chief Alassane Ouattara of Ivory Coast said sanctions should be lifted "immediately", Burkina Faso's Foreign Minister Djibril Bassole told public television station ORTM, referring to Friday's deal.

He also said President Amadou Toumani Toure, who was overthrown on March 22 and has not been seen since in public, should be able to live where he wants under army protection.

Bassole, speaking on behalf of ECOWAS Mali negotiator Blaise Compaore, the president of Burkina Faso, said: "We wanted... Toure to be allowed to return to the house of his choice and that he could also be protected by the defence and security forces."

He was speaking at Kati near Bamako, the headquarters of the junta, whose head, Captain Amadou Sanogo, read out the accord signed with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

At the same place coup leader Sanogo had announced Tuesday that the junta planned legal action against Toure for "high treason and embezzlement."

The text of the deal was signed by Bassole and Sanogo, with Ivorian Minister for African Integration Adama Bictogo and Nigeria's Foreign Minister Nurudeen Muhammad as witnesses.

Under the agreement, to be carried out "under the aegis of the ECOWAS mediator and with the support of the international community," the speaker of the national assembly would become interim president with a transitional prime minister and government.

The single-chamber Malian parliament is headed by Dioncounda Traore, who is currently abroad.

The accord states that the interim president would have "a mission to organise a presidential election in the constitutional timeframe of 40 days."

However, given the "exceptional circumstances... due to the institutional crisis and the armed rebellion in the north" it would be impossible to hold elections within 40 days and so it was "indispensable to organise a political transition" until electoral lists could be revised and "accepted by all."

On April 2 ECOWAS decided to clamp an immediate total embargo on Mali, a north African country of 15 million inhabitants, in a bid to return to constitutional order after the March 22 military coup.

The embargo included the closing of all borders of ECOWAS states with Mali except for humanitarian reasons, closing to Mali access to ECOWAS ports, and the freezing of Malian bank accounts.

Complicating the picture in the African nation, a radical Islamist group, Ansar Dine, has exploited the chaos to swoop in and instal sharia law in parts of the north.

While for a time the Islamists fought in concert with the MNLA, they have given short shrift to their independence plans.

"Our war is a holy war," Ansar Dine military chief Omar Hamaha said.

"It's a legal war in the name of Islam. We are against rebellions. We are against independence. We are against revolutions not in the name of Islam."

Hamaha was speaking in a video obtained by AFP and France 2 television, filmed on Tuesday and Wednesday after the Islamists' takeover of the fabled city of Timbuktu.

In the city of Gao, witnesses said Ansar Dine had kidnapped seven Algerian diplomats, reports confirmed by the Algerian foreign ministry.

While the Islamists appeared to have the upper hand, the separatist MNLA on Friday morning declared the independence of their desert homeland, which they call Azawad, and where several rebellions have played out in past decades.

This latest one was fuelled by a flood of weapons -- and returning Tuareg fighters -- from Libya following Moamer Kadhafi's downfall.

"We solemnly proclaim the independence of Azawad as from today," Mossa Ag Attaher, a Paris-based MNLA spokesman said on France 24 television, confirming a statement on the group's website.

He told AFP the group was ready to help fight the "terrorism" of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

But the international community swiftly rejected their proclamation.

The African Union dismissed it as "null and of no value whatsoever", while the European Union and United States both called for respect of Mali's "territorial integrity".

Amnesty International warned that north Mali was on the brink of a "major humanitarian disaster".

More than 200,000 people have fled since the rebellion began in mid-January.

Healthy Nutrition Strategies Part 1 | San Diego Informer

By Dr. Donald A. Ozello DC

Dietary journal: Nutritional needs are individual. What works for one person doesn?t work for everyone. Recording your nutritional intake ensures you are individualizing your dietary strategies.

Maintain a detailed dietary journal to develop nutritional strategies that work for you. Record what you ate, how your meal was prepared, the time you ate, the amount you consumed, your body?s positive and negative reactions, your energy levels and other information you consider pertinent. Greater details arm you with increased information. Detailed information allows you to establish nutritional strategies that fit you and your health objectives.

????? Incremental Changes: Apply dietary changes one at a time. This provides you the ability to analyze each nutritional strategy individually. Nutritional changes can positively or negatively affect the body. These effects can take place instantly or over a long period of time. Give yourself ample time to evaluate each dietary adjustment on it individual merits.

????? Wide variety of healthy foods: Achieve optimum results from your diet by eating a wide spectrum of healthy foods. This ensures consumption of all required macronutrients, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals. Consuming an array of foods helps you avoid continuous over-intake and under-intake of nutrients. Eating and preparing different types of healthy food keeps the body and brain properly nourished. ??????

????? Fruits & Vegetables: Eat five to nine servings of fruit and vegetable daily. Fruits and vegetables are filled with health promoting and disease fighting substances in their natural balance. Fruits and vegetables possess numerous dietary benefits just discovered by nutritional scientists with more to come. Fruits and vegetables can be eaten fresh, frozen, dried and canned. They can also be drank as juice.

Antioxidants are easily acquired by eating fruits and vegetables. These substances render damage causing free radicals harmless. Many fruits and vegetables contain high quantities of fiber. Fiber, also known as bulk or roughage, passes through the digestive tract quickly and promotes elimination.

Feed your body an assortment of different colored fruits and vegetables. Each color classification of fruits and vegetables supplies specific nutrients.

????? Always eat breakfast: Jump start your day with a healthy morning meal. Furnish your body and mind a needed boost of energy by eating a healthy breakfast. Eating in the morning keeps your blood glucose level from dropping too low. If you don?t have an appetite upon waking attempt to eat a small amount. One serving of banana or berries for breakfast combined with a healthy mid-morning snack usually does the trick for those without an early morning appetite.

????? Eat throughout the day: Sustain your energy and focus throughout the day by consuming food all through the day. Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. Consume healthy snacks between your major meals.

????? Eat healthy snacks and desserts: Choose fruits and vegetables over simple sugars for in-between meal snacks and desserts. Fuel your day and maintain a steady blood glucose and energy level by consuming low glycemic index foods between meals. Fruits and vegetables such as apricots, cherries, and cooked carrots provide steady, long-term energy sources.

High glycemic index foods should be avoided. Candy and chips possess a high glycemic index and will cause a spike and drop in your blood glucose and energy levels.

Nutrient dense fruits and vegetables provide you with ample quantities of required vitamins and calories. In comparison empty calories from junk food like cookies and chips contain little nutritional value. Fruits and vegetables supply nutrients, antioxidants, and phytochemicals in natural quantities and balances.

????? Calorie Control: Proper digestion takes time. Give your digestive system the time it needs by never stuffing yourself. Consume moderate amounts of food at one time. Over eating leads to fatigue, bloating and poor digestion.

The only proven long term successful weight loss method is to burn more calorie than you consume. Combine moderate exercise with common sense calorie consumption to achieve and maintain a healthy body composition. Muscle to fat ratio, or body composition, is more important that body weight. Eat to fulfill your exercise and metabolic needs without over eating. Choose nutrient dense carbohydrates, fats and proteins for utmost results.
