The death of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed 17-year-old shot earlier this month by a neighborhood watch volunteer, has prompted a protest aimed at the police department that initially investigated the case. The weapon: Skittles.

A campaign mounted through Facebook and Twitter is asking people to mail packages of the candy to Bill Lee, police chief of the Sanford Police Department, which released the man who shot Martin after questioning. The campaign has been touted at the DailyKos.com and theurbandaily.com.

They?ve chosen Skittles because that?s what Martin was carrying when George Zimmerman, 28, spotted Martin, a black teen who was walking home from a convenience store at night in a gated community. Zimmerman told police he shot Martin in self-defense after a confrontation.

Martin?s death set off protests around the United States from people demanding that Zimmerman?s actions be investigated. More than 818,000 people have signed a petition on Change.org, a social action website, calling for his arrest, Reuters reported.

At a rally Wednesday evening in New York attended by Martin's parents, protesters held signs decorated with Skittles.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for Skittles said: "We are deeply saddened by the news of Trayvon Martin's death and express our sincere condolences to his family and friends. We also respect their privacy and feel it inappropriate to get involved or comment further as we would never wish for our actions to be perceived as an attempt of commercial gain following this tragedy.?

Responding to the outcry, the Florida state attorney announced Tuesday that a grand jury would investigate the teen?s death.

AP Interview: Prince Ali wants Asian clout in FIFA

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) ? Prince Ali bin Al Hussein is hoping to bring more positive change to FIFA and help boost Asia's influence in world soccer after spearheading a campaign against a ban on Islamic women wearing hijabs during matches.

The FIFA vice president said in an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday that he hopes to contribute ideas on anti-corruption reform, which is expected to be discussed next week in Zurich.

"I'm optimistic that there will be positive change," Prince Ali said. "Obviously, we realize that things have to evolve, and I have full faith that we will evolve in a realistic way for the benefit of the sport."

The 36-year-old Jordanian prince is the youngest member of FIFA's 24-member executive committee. The committee likely will receive a report from a panel of experts next week advising FIFA on becoming more democratic, transparent and rigorous in its investigations.

"It's a very interesting time to be coming into FIFA, and therefore I have a lot of ideas," Prince Ali said. "I hope to continue to contribute, also in bringing the voice of Asia in a powerful way to this organization. We are, after all, the largest continent."

Prince Ali said that since he became FIFA vice president in January 2011, the campaign against the hijab ban "was one of my first proposals and challenges, and it was challenging, but I'm happy about the way things have gone."

The International Football Association Board took a step this month toward allowing female players to wear hijabs during games, five years after banning the headscarves because of safety reasons.

Prince Ali was optimistic an accelerated process to further test a design that holds the headscarves in place with safe Velcro fasteners will proceed smoothly ahead of the ratification of the decision in July.

His campaign against the hijab ban won the backing of the United Nations, which urged FIFA to give everyone the equal right to play soccer. Iran forfeited an Olympic women's qualifier against Jordan last June because players refused to play without hijabs.

Prince Ali said match-fixing was another problem that FIFA needs to handle better.

"Match-fixing is a huge issue that we have not only in our continent but all over the world," he said. "A lot of times you see those who are doing it are always ahead of the others, and I've always said even with FIFA that we need to put more resources into those who are tackling the issue."

Speaking about his hopes for his country in the final Asian qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup, Prince Ali expressed "full confidence in my boys," but acknowledged Jordan was in a "very tough group" with Australia, Japan, Iraq and Oman.

The Jordanian players "have a great fighting spirit, and I think we might just be the big surprise in this group," he said. "Any country that represents Asia represents us all, definitely, but obviously I hope that Jordan will be there."

Marijuana-like chemicals inhibit human immunodeficiency virus in late-stage AIDS

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

Mount Sinai School of Medicine researchers have discovered that marijuana-like chemicals trigger receptors on human immune cells that can directly inhibit a type of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) found in late-stage AIDS, according to new findings published online in the journal PLoS ONE.

Medical marijuana is prescribed to treat pain, debilitating weight loss and appetite suppression, side effects that are common in advanced AIDS. This is the first study to reveal how the marijuana receptors found on immune cells?called cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2?can influence the spread of the virus. Understanding the effect of these receptors on the virus could help scientists develop new drugs to slow the progression of AIDS.

"We knew that cannabinoid drugs like marijuana can have a therapeutic effect in AIDS patients, but did not understand how they influence the spread of the virus itself," said study author Cristina Costantino, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Pharmacology and Systems Therapeutics at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "We wanted to explore cannabinoid receptors as a target for pharmaceutical interventions that treat the symptoms of late-stage AIDS and prevent further progression of the disease without the undesirable side effects of medical marijuana."

HIV infects active immune cells that carry the viral receptor CD4, which makes these cells unable to fight off the infection. In order to spread, the virus requires that "resting" immune cells be activated. In advanced AIDS, HIV mutates so it can infect these resting cells, gaining entry into the cell by using a signaling receptor called CXCR4. By treating the cells with a cannabinoid agonist that triggers CB2, Dr. Costantino and the Mount Sinai team found that CB2 blocked the signaling process, and suppressed infection in resting immune cells.

Triggering CB1 causes the drug high associated with marijuana, making it undesirable for physicians to prescribe. The researchers wanted to explore therapies that would target CB2 only. The Mount Sinai team infected healthy immune cells with HIV, then treated them with a chemical that triggers CB2 called an agonist. They found that the drug reduced the infection of the remaining cells.

"Developing a drug that triggers only CB2 as an adjunctive treatment to standard antiviral medication may help alleviate the symptoms of late-stage AIDS and prevent the virus from spreading," said Dr. Costantino. Because HIV does not use CXCR4 to enhance immune cell infection in the early stages of infection, CB2 agonists appear to be an effective antiviral drug only in late-stage disease.

As a result of this discovery, the research team led by Benjamin Chen, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases, and Lakshmi Devi, PhD, Professor of Pharmacology and Systems Therapeutics at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, plans to develop a mouse model of late-stage AIDS in order to test the efficacy of a drug that triggers CB2 in vivo. In 2009 Dr. Chen was part of a team that captured on video for the first time the transfer of HIV from infected T-cells to uninfected T-cells.

Inhibitor causing male pattern baldness and target for hair-loss treatments identified

ScienceDaily (Mar. 21, 2012) ? Researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania have identified an abnormal amount a protein called Prostaglandin D2 in the bald scalp of men with male pattern baldness, a discovery that may lead directly to new treatments for the most common cause of hair loss in men. In both human and animal models, researchers found that a prostaglandin known as PGD2 and its derivative, 15-dPGJ2, inhibit hair growth. The PGD2-related inhibition occurred through a receptor called GPR44, which is a promising therapeutic target for androgenetic alopecia in both men and women with hair loss and thinning.

The study is published in Science Translational Medicine.

Male pattern baldness strikes 8 of 10 men under 70 years old, and causes hair follicles to shrink and produce microscopic hairs, which grow for a shorter duration of time than normal follicles.

Researchers took an unbiased approach when scanning for potential biological causes of baldness, looking in scalp tissue from balding and non-bald spots from men with male pattern baldness and then corroborating findings in mouse models. They found that levels of PGD2 were elevated in bald scalp tissue at levels 3 times greater than what was found in comparative haired scalp of men with androgenetic alopecia. When PGD2 was added to cultured hair follicles, PGD2-treated hair was significantly shortened, while PGD2's derivative, 15-dPGJ2, completely inhibited hair growth.

"Although a different prostaglandin was known to increase hair growth, our findings were unexpected, as prostaglandins haven't been thought about in relation to hair loss, yet it made sense that there was an inhibitor of hair growth, based on our earlier work looking at hair follicle stem cells," said George Cotsarelis, MD, chair and professor of Dermatology, and senior author on the studies. In a Penn study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation last year, underlying hair follicle stem cells were found intact, suggesting that the scalp was lacking an activator or something was inhibiting hair follicle growth.

Prostaglandins are well characterized for their role in many bodily functions -- controlling cell growth, constricting and dilating smooth muscle tissue -- and a different prostaglandin (F2alpha) is known to increase hair growth. Researchers found that as PGD2 inhibits hair growth, other prostaglandins work in opposition, enhancing and regulating the speed of hair growth.

While these studies looked at AGA in men, the researchers noted that prostaglandins may represent a common pathway shared by both men and women with AGA. Future studies, potentially testing topical treatments that may target GPR44, can determine whether targeting prostaglandins will benefit woman with AGA as well.

The research team consisted of Dr. Cotsarelis, lead author Luis Garza, MD, PhD, (former post-doctoral fellow at Penn, now at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine) and Yaping Liu (now at Merck & company), Zaixin Yang, Brinda Alagesan, Scott Norberg, Tailun Zhao, Hanz Blatt, from Penn's Dermatology department; Garrett FitzGerald and John Lawson from Penn's Department of Pharmacology and the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics; David Stanton and Lee Carrasco from Penn's Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and colleagues at Gillette, and University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

The study was funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health (R01-AR46837, P30-AR057217, 5R01AR055309 and K08AR055666, 5-P30-AR-057217-02), the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the Edwin and Fannie Gray Hall Center for Human Appearance at Penn Medicine, American Skin Association, Dermatology Foundation and L'Oreal. Drs. Cotsarelis and Garza are co-inventors on a patent owned by the University of Pennsylvania describing the PGD2 pathway as a target for inhibiting hair loss.

Benefits of Home Renovation and Finding the Best Construction ...

In between home renovation and moving to a bigger house, a lot of people seem to think that the latter is a more plausible option. But there are actually more benefits to doing home renovation such as loft extensions Bristol, garage conversions and even conservatory installation.

If you are from the Bristol area, one of your best options is loft extensions. An additional loft space can be turned into another living room space, storage area, an extra bedroom or even a vacation room. During those days when your time and your budget does not permit you to go out of town or out of the country, you can simply use your vacation room to get away from the everyday hustle and bustle of your life.

Home renovation no doubt makes your home a lot more aesthetically pleasing. The moment you walk into your renovated space, you immediately feel your stress and problems draining away. It is like your own personal achievement. Seeing the beauty of your home keeps you grounded and gives you hope. Seeing the happy and smiling faces of your family members is also priceless.

The additional space offered by home renovation, particularly extensions, can afford you more privacy. It gives family members more room to groove. If a small space is becoming challenging and you just want more space to breathe and relax, loft extensions could be an ideal solution. This way, family members can each have their own space. It increases privacy and enhances your comfort.

Extensions on Bristol houses can also increase the value of your home. Should you decide to relocate and move to another town, you can easily sell your home at a higher price. Beautiful construction projects are tedious to do so a lot of buyers are looking for homes that have already been extended or remodelled so they can move in with minimum fuss. You can easily get a good price for your home with an extension room or a renovation added, and many people look for houses with conservatories when they are buying.

You should know that there are a myriad of constriction Bristol companies offering their extensions Bristol services. Your numerous choices might overwhelm you. To avoid scams, make sure that you do a considerable amount of research to ensure that you choose a company that is trustworthy.

To find the best construction companies in Bristol, scout the internet and yellow pages. Most companies now have an online page so it should not be hard to find a good one on the internet. Check their company background to find out how long they have been operating. Reputation is a huge factor to consider here. They should have a steadfast reputation that goes way back from the time they started.

Find out if there have been complaints and reports about the services of the company. Scams are not impossible so you have to make sure that you will not fall prey to them. You are going to spend a hefty amount of money on a loft extension or conservatory so you have to go the extra mile to ensure that you are getting your moneys worth.

Narrow down your choices to three companies. Now ask for an initial price quote from these companies for the extension project you have in mind. The prices should not be too far from each other. If the price is very cheap, there might be a few hidden charges you are not aware of.

Ask them what is included in their services to figure out if they are worth transacting with. Find out how long they need to complete the extension project. This will give you time to prepare and decide the best time to start with the remodelling.

Make sure you and your family members are prepared for the temporary disruption that the construction might bring to the household. It will be disorganized and noisy for a while. This is why it is also important to choose construction Bristol companies that can respect your privacy and will avoid adding chaos to the house as much as possible. Loft extensions Bristol have to go without a hitch so make sure the builders are competent enough and experienced enough in extensions Bristol to do the job well.

Mauritania to hand over ex-spy chief to Libya

(AP) ? Mauritania will hand over one of Moammar Gadhafi's closest associates, former Libyan intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senoussi, for trial in his home country, a Libyan official said Wednesday.

"The Mauritanian government has given their agreement for the extradition of Abdullah al-Senoussi to Libya so he can be judged by a fair process," said Libyan spokesman Nasser al-Manei.

He did not say when the move might happen, but said the Libyan delegation had visited al-Senoussi in his cell in Mauritania's capital and confirmed his identity.

The former intelligence chief is accused of attacking civilians during the uprising in Libya last year and of the 1989 bombing of a French airliner. He was considered Gadhafi's "black box" and known to be among his inner circle of confidants. He was also the ousted leader's brother-in-law.

Al-Senoussi was detained Saturday in Mauritania.

The International Criminal Court, France and Libya have all said they want to prosecute al-Senoussi.

He is wanted in Libya for a number of crimes, including his alleged role in the Abu Salim prison massacre of more than 1,200 prisoners by Gadhafi's regime in 1996.

Judges at the Netherlands-based ICC issued an arrest warrant for al-Senoussi last June on two counts of crimes against humanity ? murder and persecution ? for allegedly masterminding attacks on civilians in the early days of the uprising that eventually toppled Gadhafi from power.

Mauritania is not a member of the court.

The court also indicted Gadhafi but the ousted leader was killed by rebel fighters in October. Libyan authorities say they want to put Seif al-Islam, one of Gadhafi's sons, on trial at home instead of turning him over him to the court.

Libyan officials are currently holding Seif al-Islam, who was arrested in November by fighters in Libya's remote southern desert. The former heir apparent has been held largely without access to the outside world ever since.

France convicted al-Senoussi and five other Libyans in absentia and sentenced them to life in prison in France for the 1989 bombing of a passenger jet over Niger that killed all 170 people on board including 54 French people. The French government asked last year that he be handed over to France when captured.
