GOP isn't sold on Romney, seeking other options (AP)

WASHINGTON ? If polls show one thing with certainty, it's that Republicans aren't sold on Mitt Romney and they've been looking for other presidential candidates.

At least eight other Republicans have seen their standings soar in GOP primary surveys since the beginning of the year.

Sarah Palin, Chris Christie, Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani didn't run. Nor did Donald Trump. And among those who actually got in the race, Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry, and now, Herman Cain all have sat near_ or at ? the top of national polls, at least briefly.

The indecisiveness is a reflection on Romney, who hasn't been able to lock up the GOP's support even though he's essentially been running for president since losing his 2008 bid.

Many Republicans know him. They just don't love him.

A recent Associated Press-GfK poll found that 64 percent of conservative Republicans viewed Romney favorably but only 20 percent had deeply positive opinions about him.

"The GOP is in a rebellious and ultraconservative mood," said Andrew Kohut, president of the Pew Research Center. "And," he added, "Mitt Romney is not rebellious."

Or, for that matter, ultraconservative.

Consider that in a Tuesday debate, Romney defended the 2008-2009 Wall Street bailout that irks the tea party and declared that he could work with "good" Democrats. He also gave one of his most spirited defenses of his health care initiative when he was Massachusetts governor, legislation that President Barack Obama has called a partial blueprint for his own national overhaul.

While those positions may make him appealing to a wider swath of Americans in next fall's election, they greatly disturb conservatives who dominate the GOP primary electorate.

And that helps explain why some Republicans have been itching for someone else.

Generally, Republicans say that Romney has more experience and a better chance to beat Obama next fall than anyone else in the field. But those on the party's right flank doubt whether he ? more so than other candidates ? shares their values.

Conservatives in the potential Republican electorate were deeply divided on that question in a CBS News/New York Times poll early this month. Only 12 percent chose Romney, while nearly half picked Cain (20 percent), Bachmann (18 percent) or Perry (11 percent).

Such divisions have been the most defining factor of the race so far.

It's not just Romney who has failed to solidify his support with the Republican primary electorate. None of the other candidates who have risen in polls has been able to, either.

Until now, Republicans have been bouncing from candidate to candidate ? and even some noncandidates ? in search of the perfect nominee.

But with the GOP field set and no more people flirting with bids, it's entirely possible that Republicans will rally behind one candidate ? perhaps even Romney ? between now and January when the first votes are cast.

Indeed, a host of Republicans ? 76 percent in a recent CBS-New York Times poll ? said it was too early to say who they would support when voting begins in January. Just 19 percent said they had firmly chosen a candidate.

The volatile race is taking place in a dramatically different Republican Party than the one that nominated John McCain ? and for much of the 2008 race strongly favored the thrice-married Giuliani.

The GOP fell out of public favor following McCain's loss to Obama. It then rebounded with the growth of the tea party movement, which helped Republicans win control of the House and boost its ranks in the Senate last year.

Today's Republican Party is more conservative.

"The most visible shift in the political landscape since ... 2005 is the emergence of a single bloc of across-the-board conservatives," the Pew Center said earlier this year.

And those conservatives ? at least at this point ? seem reluctant to continue a trend that's been the hallmark of Republican presidential primaries in recent decades.

The Republican Party usually has chosen a nominee who has been the perceived next in line.

Ronald Reagan lost once before winning the 1980 nomination. George H.W. Bush got beat that year, became Reagan's vice president and won the GOP nod in 1988. Bob Dole lost twice before becoming the party favorite in 1996. And McCain made a strong run at the nomination in 2000 before clinching it eight years later.

This year, it's Romney who is making his second bid.

And, if history is a guide, he's the most likely to end up winning the nomination ? even if the all-over-the-map polls don't show it.

Making Low-cost Phone Calls Using SMS | Bobs art store

All over the world, SMS ? or Quick Message Service ? has become ubiquitous. Millions upon tens of millions of SMSes are sent and obtained each day from one cell phone to another. These a hundred and sixty-character messages are the way during which people across the globe or across the nook keep in contact with one another. More and more, nevertheless, individuals are realizing that they can make low cost telephone calls utilizing SMS.

Utilizing an SMS gateway, an inexpensive telephone call might be triggered using SMS. An SMS triggered cellphone name to Jamaica, for instance, would cost lower than one U.S. dollar. Expertise means that you can place a call between any two phone handsets, whereas your mobile phone or laptop keyboard becomes a convenient dial pad. Opposite to what you could think about, a telephone name placed with an SMS gateway makes use of a dependable phone network, so the standard of the call is high.

Greater than Telephone Calls

An SMS gateway can be used for more than an affordable telephone call. There are a number of SMS-based providers that you would be able to use.

E mail to SMS: An e mail to SMS service allows you to send SMS by email. Some SMS gateways go a step further by permitting your corporation contacts, family members, and mates to send SMS to you.

SMS to Email: Almost all mobile companies provide SMS to email. Some SMS gateways, nonetheless, permit two-approach communication between electronic mail and SMS ? without limiting communication to a short window of time.

SMS to SMS: With SMS to SMS communication, you may broadcast one SMS to at least one particular person or to many various people. The better SMS gateways enable for an SMS to be despatched discretely, or permit an SMS to be despatched to a set of predefined names that you just provide.

Scheduling: Although simple SMS scheduling will be carried out with a cell phone, SMS gateways use a Net interface to allow for more complicated scheduling.

Fax Companies

With the appropriate SMS gateway, you may ship faxes wherever using electronic mail to fax. As well as, you may fax a web page to any fax machine utilizing SMS. Furthermore, you?ll be able to create a schedule to be able to frequently receive a fax of a selected web page.

Some SMS gateways cost for their providers in laborious forex; sometimes, you should use a credit card or a cost service like moneybookers. Different SMS gateways incorporate a credit score system, and charge for services with credits. You?ll be able to either purchase credits utilizing a bank card or payment service, or you possibly can earn credit by referring mates, family members, and business associates to the service. In essence, you receive a commission every time some you refer makes use of the companies of the SMS gateway. In the event you choose to go that route, you can go from making low cost telephone calls using SMS to making free telephone calls using SMS. What might be higher than that?

Having a great science conversation with a kid

What makes a great science book for kids? Scientific accuracy is certainly important but on its own it isn?t enough. Great books are also fun to read, but they are more than that too. The best children?s books spark imagination and understanding. They take the reader, adult and child, somewhere else. They lead kids to ask more questions, to seek more information, to try something out and see what happens. Great science books make for great conversations.

Daniel Loxton?s Ankylosaur Attack, illustrated with Jim W.W. Smith, is one of those books. It is carefully researched and fun to read but as a whole package it is truly a conversation piece.

(In an accompanying post today, I?ve also interviewed Daniel about the book, his motivations for writing it and how it was created.)

Ankylosaur Attack is a simple story of a day in the life of a young Ankylosaur. In his daily wandering he comes upon an elderly Ankylosaur who initially tries to scare the young one away. When a hungry Tyrannosaur approaches, though, it is the young one who saves the day with his mighty Ankylosaur tail. The story and the writing are simple, mostly descriptive, showing the dinosaurs? actions without attaching too much human emotion to them. This sets it apart from many narrative science books for children which often rely on anthropomorphisms.

With this simple story, it is the images that are the real star. The illustrations integrate striking computer-generated dinosaur figures into photographed backgrounds. The effect it creates is of fantasy realistic photos of the dinosaurs and their environment. There are lush green ferns, complex undergrowth and stunning waterfalls. There are even beautiful reflections to notice in the dinosaurs? eyes and skin.

?

So what to do with a great book like this? Have a conversation of course!

Science books provide a wonderful opportunity for young children to make insightful observations, to raise their own questions and to propose their own explanations based on the available evidence. They offer the chance to think and talk scientifically [1] and can make scientific thinking part of a treasured everyday activity like story reading. [2] Narrative books in particular can stimulate discussions of fantasy and reality and about what we can really know in science. This means there are plenty of things to talk about!

Having a great conversation about science with a kid follows many of the same principles of any conversation. For example, try not to ask questions for which there is an obvious right answer; reading a book shouldn?t be a quiz. The best conversations happen when both people are truly interested in what the other has to say and there is room for the unexpected. If you know the one right answer already, there?s nowhere else to go with the conversation. At the same time, though, very open ended questions can be difficult to answer and can stall the conversation while your young reading partner thinks about where to begin. Kids can sometimes be overwhelmed by these questions and end up just answering with a timid shoulder shrug or quiet silence while they try to figure out what you?re looking for.

A great place to begin is with attention-focusing questions. [3] These are questions that draw a child?s attention to a particular element of the story or illustration but keep the actual answer open. For example, ?Wow, look at that bird! What do you notice about its feathers?? The question isn?t too open, your young reading partner will focus with you on the bird but you?re actually asking about what she sees and what she thinks is important and relevant. This can lead in surprising and fun directions. Kids will often notice things that you haven?t. Attention-focusing questions can begin with ?What do you notice about??? ?What do you see in??? or even ?What surprised you about??? They?re always open-ended but also focused.

Exploring children?s answers to attention-focusing questions can lead to measuring and counting questions and comparison questions. Just like the names suggest, these questions encourage kids to dig a little deeper and look at specific information such as how many long feathers and how many short feathers a bird has or to compare how many long feathers different birds have. Again in a great conversation counting questions aren?t asked just for purpose of practicing counting (but of course practicing counting is a great thing to do). The best counting questions follow up on what the child has found interesting or noteworthy and continue the conversation by adding new information and stimulating new questions. For example, counting the different feathers on the birds might lead to asking about why a bird has those feathers, do you think they help it fly?

Attention-focusing, measuring, counting and comparison questions are all ways of gathering observations. They ask kids and adults to pay close attention to what they see and to use their senses to gather interesting data. The next step is the most fun, moving from observations to inferences. Books like Ankylosaur Attack offer a terrific place to help children learn about the differences between observations and inferences and to practice both skills. Inference questions ask children to propose possible explanations for what they observe. Just like observation questions, they should be open-ended but focused. Making inferences from a story isn?t about guessing the right answer. Great inference questions ask kids to really express what they?re thinking, the connections and possible explanations that they see. Adding the simple words ?do you think? can make a huge difference. Instead of asking ?Why do those birds have different feathers??, a question that sounds like it has a right answer, try ?Why do you think those birds have different feathers??. ?Why do you think??? ?How do you think?? are great ways to ask children to propose their own explanations, showing them at the same time that science is not about reproducing answers but about people (them!) making inferences.

Helping children understand the idea of inferences can also lead to important discussions about how scientists know what they know. This is especially important for things we can?t observe directly, like dinosaurs. When researchers have asked young children about how scientists know what dinosaurs look like, the children often respond that scientists have seen dinosaurs, that they know what dinosaurs look like through observation, not inference. Creating opportunities for children to understand the difference and make their own inferences can be a great way to start a deeper discussion of how scientists know what they know. This is especially important in a book like Ankylosaur Attack that creates the fantasy of having photographs of dinosaurs. Children can and do understand the differences between fantastic and realistic elements of stories but direct conversations about it go a long way in helping them.[4]

So what about reading Ankylosaur Attack? Play along with me and let?s have a conversation with a kid about it. On the second page, the young Ankylosaur looks up. We see a close up of its face in profile, mouth open towards the sky. The text reads, ?Pterosaurs circled overhead. Their huge bat-like wings caught the wind. They turned and soared. The dinosaur watched as they squawked and screeched. He lifted his head and bellowed to the sky. But the pterosaurs paid no attention?

?Woah, look at that close up of the ankylosaur?s head!? I exclaim, ?What do you think is interesting about his face??

The child runs her finger over the page ?Cool colours on his skin.? She moves her finger further and says with surprise, ?Hey, look! He?s got no teeth.?

?No, teeth?? I ask, ?Wow, that?s interesting. Let?s look at some of the other pictures and see if we can find any teeth.? We flip to the next page (to the image included above) and see, just barely visible in the back of the ankylosaur?s mouth a small row of rounded teeth.

?Hey look, teeth!? she says.

?Good observation. I wonder why we couldn?t see them in the last picture.? I flip back to the previous page. ?Why do you think we can?t see them here??

?Hmm?? she says ?maybe they?re only at the back??

?Good thinking. Maybe we?ll see some more pictures that will help us figure that out.?

On the pages that follow we see a few more pictures that show the ankylosaur?s teeth just barely visible at the back of his mouth. Next we meet, the aging ankylosaur, and before I can even ask, she exclaims, ?Hey look, his teeth are the same. I can hardly see them!? ?Great observation?

It?s the next page, the really jumps out at us though ? a close-up of the tyrannosaur, with sharp teeth glistening. ?Woah? I say slowly, ?There?s some more teeth. How do those teeth look different from the ankylosaur?s??

?Yikes, they?re pointy and sharp. They?re huge!?

?Ya, huge? I say. The difference is startling. With these great observations, maybe this is a place to start making some inferences.

So I ask tentatively, ?Why do you think their teeth are so different??

These simple questions offer a wonderful gateway to talking about the differences between plant-eating and meat-eating dinosaurs and, even further, how scientists can use teeth to make inferences about what a particular dinosaur ate. We can talk about how scientists know and how cool that is that they can learn so many things just from teeth. This could bring us back to talking about the fantasy pictures, that there aren?t any real pictures of dinosaurs. There are endless conversation paths to explore. Books like Ankylosaur Attack are wonderful resources for engaging with science. Through rich illustrations and fascinating texts that can be plumbed for observations and they can encourage inferences. They can allow adults and kids to have great conversations about science.

YouTube Launches Space Experiment Contest for Students (SPACE.com)

A few lucky teenagers will soon get a chance to help perform some science that's truly out of this world.

On Monday (Oct. 10), YouTube, NASA and several other partners announced the creation of YouTube Space Lab, a global effort challenging students between the ages of 14 and 18 to design an experiment that can be conducted in space.

Two winning entries will be selected and performed by astronauts aboard the International Space Station, 240 miles (386 kilometers) above Earth. These experiments will also be streamed live on the video-sharing site YouTube, contest organizers said.

The goal is to engage students in science, engineering and math, and to help them develop their creative and analytical faculties, officials said. [Video: YouTube's Student Space Lab Challenge]

"The space station really is the greatest science classroom we have," said former astronaut Leland Melvin, associate administrator for education at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C., in a statement. "This contest will capitalize on students' excitement for space exploration while engaging them in real-life scientific research and experimentation."

The computer company Lenovo, space tourism company Space Adventures and the European and Japanese space agencies are also partners in the event.

Students must submit a two-minute video application explaining their experiment via YouTube by Dec. 7. They can work alone or in groups of up to three people. Students can submit up to three experiments in one of two disciplines ? biology or physics. [6 Everyday Things That Happen Strangely in Space]

The top 60 experiments will be announced on Jan. 3, 2012, at which time final judging will begin. The judges will include many big names in science and space exploration, including renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking and NASA's human exploration and operations chief, Bill Gerstenmaier.

After weighing input from the YouTube community, judges will narrow the 60 candidate experiments down to six finalists. These finalists will meet in Washington, D.C., in March 2012, and get a chance to experience zero-gravity flights on an aircraft and receive other prizes.

Two global winners ? one from the 14- to 16-year-old age group and one from the 17-18 age group ? will then be picked from the six finalists. The winning experiments will fly to the space station next summer aboard a robotic Japanese cargo ship called HTV-3, officials said.

And that's not all. The two overall winners will also get to choose a space experience as a prize, according to a contest description.

The two winners will get to choose one of two big prizes: a trip to Japan to watch their experiment blast off, or (after they turn 18) a chance to undergo spaceflight training in Star City outside Moscow, the training center for Russian cosmonauts, officials said.

YouTube Space Lab is organized by YouTube and Lenovo, in cooperation with the space tourism company Space Adventures and NASA, the European Space Agency and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

How to Understand Cruise Ship Ratings

To many people cruise ship ratings are just numbers and symbols with little rhyme or reason. To understand what these ratings mean, it is necessary to take a look at how they are made. Only then can you reasonably use them to help you decide on a cruise ship to take.

What the Ratings Are

The most popular cruise ship ratings are done in the form of a five-star-ratings system. Cruise ships are graded with one five stars is low and five high. The ships are not for the price or age of the ship in making sense. However, if the ship decoration ", if the furnishings are shabby and worn, the ship is not able to get a good rating. Some systems evaluations are done by hand with thumb up instead. From 1-5 rule is the same.

The ships will also be a vote to be given in a row every time the expression. These numbers can say aaccurate story of how good your experience will be on the ship. The numbers are based on a scoring system where each individual aspect of the trip is evaluated and you give points to each one. Then, the areas that are most important to passengers are emphasized in the average. The resulting number is between 0 and 100.

People will grade ships on whatever they find to be important to their vacation experience on the ship. Their cruise ship ratings will include how they feel about their cabins, the responsiveness of the staff, the quality of the food, and the entertainment value of the shows. The ratings are made up by past guests or cruise critics.

What the Ratings Mean to You

There are some ships that rate five stars plus. They tend to be the expensive ultra luxury cruise ships. They have gourmet chefs, the finest accommodations, and service staff who almost seem to know what you need before you ask for it.

Five star ships are still very good cruises, run by premium cruise lines. Everything is of very high quality, yet there may be a few things that are not quite perfect.

Four plus stars are good cruise ship ratings. There has to be something above the standard cruise for a ship to get this rating. They do something outstanding or have an exceptional feature.

A four star cruise is a perfectly adequate cruise ship for most vacationers. Families and vacationing couples who are not spoiled by expensive cruises are often quite happy with a cruise of this caliber. There may be plenty to do, with sports, kids? activities, spas, and discos.

If you get a three plus cruise ship vacation at a low cost, you might be wise to go in with lowered expectations. If you do, you can have a good time, even though the ship may not be new nor the service prompt.

Anything less than three stars, and you will probably not be happy with your cruise. Of course, you should not take the word of one rater alone. Instead, go for a variety of guest ratings and professional ratings. You will be glad you did.

Spirituality and Depression | The Simple Self-Improvement Blog

Settle in a comfortable armchair that you favor. Have a chamomile goblet in your grasp, play some memorable soft music or listen to a soothing harp, with a touch of lavender or frankincense for an alluring trap, take a deep and sedating breath, relax your shoulders and indulge yourself sifting through wisdom in depth.

As established in previous articles defining spirituality as the balance between mind and body, and the importance of its role in guiding us towards our self awareness and inner peace.

And as concluded that spirituality can indeed alter an ill behavior or a miss conduct, it can also buildup self esteem and self motivation.

The self is the most important factor in forming a personality, and how we nourish it dictates how our personality shapes and settles.

The self by nature is more likely to attend to present issues rather than foresight a future effect of a current cause or regress to avoid a repetition of past mischief or mishap that is why the self falls into so many frequent unforeseen traps.

The self needs to be educated, pampered and catered for, it needs to be motivated and constantly reminded of its priorities since it is seldom aware, as it is driven by desires and temptation with high regards to criteria and spontaneous interests?

Spirituality does exactly that. The whole aim of spirituality is to set the guidelines for self improvement and self progress.

As for depression the mind deformity of this age, I have given an ample of information about it in my previous (related to depression) articles. But I am afraid it?s never enough said about this very traitorous opponent to the self.

Ego tends to mislead us into ignoring the early symptoms of depression, which is anxiety, fatigue, and sleeping disorder in addition to the lack of concentration, social interaction, self esteem and other repercussions falling under endless negativities?

The reason why almost 20% percent of the international populations of our race are falling under depression is that the majority of us totally ignore it, giving it an advantage to sneak and infiltrate our mental health pattern and inhabit our minds while inhibiting our average day performance.

And as I have frequently attempted to focus on a new observation in my articles, I will keep to what I am accustomed to and raise the eyebrows of behavioral science community to this new observation.

A new observation will help categorize depression in the field of behavioral science I hope.

When I started observing depression conditions and cases in its mild or sever forms, I at first thought it befalls the poverty stricken communities of the world at a higher rate in comparison to the socially well off and financially more secure.

Well, in part that maybe true, only and on the other hand, I found it to spread among the well off, good looking, elite and popular individuals just as much, even more.

However, the difference which is truly remarkable in here is the fact that the poor and humble tends to recover from depressions much faster than the well off.

We all run into obstacles deterring us from reaching our set out goals, but the ones who are used to success and easy living finds it much harder to adapt to new situation facing them and easily go into panic mode, while the poor and humble has (due to his experimental immunity in life) simpler way to adapt, what come may, this adaptation is what really concerns me in this article.

I remember a common saying; as high a bird may fly, as would be his fall. To put it in other words, the higher you climb the harder your fall will be?

The poor and humble have it in their culture to surrender and accept what befalls them and maybe that is why their depression is usually less sever and their recovery would be much faster. Could it be that their expectations of materialism is in reality lesser?

The poor and humble falls into trance more often and at a faster pace than the rest, and trance is a great healer to many ailments including depression.

Spirituality is the best tuition available at hand and certainly better than anti depressant drugs and much cheaper for that matter too.

Spirituality promotes inner peace and self assertiveness when it comes to setting out priorities in life, and what makes us more liable to fall victims for depression is at the end our list of priorities and expensive goals. This list of priorities is what dictates the pattern of behavior of the majority.

Spirituality may and can indeed heal depression by converting us into less demanding to material things and less overloaded with superficial visions to achieve through excessive consumption pattern.

It seems that the poor and humble found a more convenient way to tackle depression, and that way can be also found in spirituality and religion which is but a vehicle promoting spirituality to help us sustain our sanity and preserve our inner and overall peace in life.

Look for the simple things in life with a gentle stride may you strive.

As I write my final phrase, and you cease your gaze to depression maze

Finish your chamomile and stare into the void for a while.

Enjoy the rest of your day and let spirituality guide your way.

Hum yourself a lullaby theme and get yourself ready for a twilight dream.

Novel technique uses RNA interference to block inflammation

ScienceDaily (Oct. 9, 2011) ? Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) researchers -- along with collaborators from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Alnylam Pharmaceuticals -- have found a way to block, in an animal model, the damaging inflammation that contributes to many disease conditions.

In their report receiving early online publication in Nature Biotechnology, the investigators describe using small interfering RNA technology to silence the biochemical signals that attract a particular group of inflammatory cells to areas of tissue damage.

"The white blood cells known as monocytes play a critical role in the early stages of the immune response," says Matthias Nahrendorf, MD, PhD, of the MGH Center for Systems Biology, the paper's senior author. "We now know there are two subsets of monocytes -- an inflammatory subset that defends against pathogens and a reparative subset that supports healing. But if the inflammatory response is excessive, it can block the healing process and exacerbate conditions such heart disease and cancer."

Cells damaged by injury or disease release a cocktail of chemicals called cytokines that attract immune cells to the site of the damage. Inflammatory monocytes are guided to sites of tissue injury by a receptor protein called CCR2, and the MGH-led team devised a strategy targeting that molecule to block the inflammatory process but not the action of the reparative monocytes.

Small interfering RNA (siRNA) technology prevents production of specific proteins by binding to associated messenger RNA molecules and preventing their translation. Because the technique requires extreme precision in developing the right siRNA molecule and delivering it to the correct cellular location, the MGH team collaborated with Alnylam scientists who are experts in RNA-interference-based therapeutics and with MIT investigators Robert Langer, ScD, and Daniel Anderson, PhD, who have developed a nanoparticle-based system for delivering molecules to specific cellular compartments.

To make sure that their siRNA preparation targeted the right monocytes, the investigators first confirmed that its use reduced levels of CCR2 in monocytes and increased levels of the fragments produced when siRNA binds to its target. They then showed that monocytes from mice treated with the siRNA preparation were unable to migrate towards CCR2's usual molecular target. Experiments in animal models of several important diseases showed that the siRNA preparation reduced the amount of cardiac muscle damaged by a heart attack, reduced the size and the number of inflammatory cells in atherosclerotic plaques and in lymphomas, and improved the survival of transplanted pancreatic islets.

"These inflammatory monocytes are involved in almost every major disease," Nahrendorf explains. "Anti-inflammatory drugs currently on the market hit every inflammatory cell in the body, which can produce unwanted side effects. This new siRNA treatment doesn't affect inflammatory cells that don't rely on the CCCR2 receptor. That makes a big difference." Nahrendorf is an assistant professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School.

Students co-host architecture conference | Interior Design Schools ...

by Linden on Friday, October 7th, 2011 | Comments Off

The San Antonio Missions, the Pearl Brewery, the Tower of the Americas, the San Antonio River Walk will take center stage when an estimated 300 architecture, interior design and construction science students from 32 schools across the South, flock to the Alamo City for the bi-annual American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) Quad Conference.

The event takes place today through Sunday at the Hyatt Regency San Antonio.

The conference will be hosted by the American Institute of Architecture Students chapter at the University of Texas at San Antonio. these students have organized lectures, tours and more that will showcase the buildings and structures that make San Antonio unique.

Scheduled events include a River Walk tour led by Alamo Architects Principal Irby Hightower, a rendering workshop led by UTSA professor Craig Blount, and a Roaring `20s-themed Beaux arts ball.

Spearheading the efforts are the local AIAS officers, who represent the different disciplines of the UTSA College of Architecture.

President and architectural student Obi Okolo, vice president and construction science and management student Bianca Medina, and director of public relations Lisa Berry all making sure the conference offers students plenty of opportunities for both learning and fun.

Each of these three students bring a unique perspective to the event, and are working around the clock to design and build a conference that will inspire all those who participate.

?I want people to walk away from the conference with a better understanding of not only their profession, but also the other trades of the building industry,? said Berry in a press release. ?And I want them fall in love with the city as deeply as I have.?

To most people, a door is simply a door. But to Okolo, a door is a conflict resolution.

?I have always seen a door as a porthole,? said the 20-year-old. ?Two different experiences, such as inside and outside, must be resolved by the door.?

?My decision to go into architecture was based on a little bit of rebellion and a little bit of inspiration,? laughed the Clark High School graduate.

Medina became interested in the craft at a young age. She recalls helping her family build their current home when she was a student at Bush Middle School.

?I went with them when they looked at spec homes and selected materials,? she recalled. ?It was fun.?

So fun in fact, that Medina began taking architecture and engineering electives while attending Reagan High School.

It was the business courses, however, that eventually drew her interest and she began to realize that it was taking a project through every aspect from concept to completion that was her passion.

?I?ve always been interested in planning process,? she said. ?I like being given a project and making sure that all of the pieces come together. It?s like a blank slate and the part to look forward to, even with all stress, is end product.?

?We want to show all sides of the city,? she explained. ?We want the students to live like tourists by day and locals by night.?
