Major Google app update coming today, including new photo event features

Android Central Android Central Android Central

Google's been on a roll with software and feature updates this past week or so. And so when Google social boss Vic Gundotra said he "couldn't sleep" tonight, we thought we might be in for big Google+ news today. And it seems that's exactly what we're getting, as Google prepares to roll out version 3.3 of Google+ for Android. Highlights int his release include new photo features, including better Photo sphere support, and integration with the newly-launched G+ Communities feature.

The new Google+ app will land later today, along with new features for the desktop version of Google's social network. Here's what we can expect from the new app --

  • New photo stuff -- Instant upload now offers up to 5GB of  full-sized photo backups. Photo sphere panoramas recorded on Android 4.2 can be viewed on devices running Android 2.2 or higher.

  • Events and communities -- Communities support for the mobile app. And it's now possible to send messages to individual event guests and see who's opened invitations.

  • Hangouts -- Now only 150kb of bandwidth is required to participate in a hangout.

  • General improvements -- The ability to edit your profile on-the-go, new "subtle" notices when new posts arrive, and improvements to the posting menu. Animated emoticons!

  • Google Now integration -- Birthday notifications through cards on Google Now, including G+ links to wish the person a happy birthday.

Various other updates for the web version of Google+ are expected to be rolled out today too, including improvements to solo broadcasts via Hangouts on Air, the ability to easily create duplicate events and easier RSVPing.

We'll keep you posted with further details when the app update drops.

Google Play brings Books and Movies to Russia, keeps reaching more audiences

A little over a month after announcing the imminent arrival of more Google Play content to a few areas around the globe, the Mountain View-based company has let it be known that a couple of its media services are now also available in Russia. While today's announcement only includes the ability to rent / buy movies and books (purchases only) from the Play store, something tells us Russian users invested in Google's extensive ecosystem will still be happy to hear they, too, can get a piece of the pie. Additionally, and not surprisingly, the search giant is quick to point out that there's a ton of Russian-language video and reading content, including films such as Shadow Boxing and bestseller books from authors like Tatyana Tolstaya.

Police find getaway car in Manhattan shooting

By Jonathan Dienst and Shimon Prokupecz, NBCNewYork.com

Police in New York have found the getaway car used by the gunman who shot and killed a man along a busy street at midday in midtown Manhattan this week, and are interviewing a man who may have information about the case, NBCNewYork.com has learned.

AP via New York Police Department

This still image made from a video provided by the New York City Police Department shows the gunman, left, behind Brandon Woodard pulling the weapon from his jacket pocket a moment before Monday's shooting in New York.

Sources told NBCNewYork.com investigators have identified the car as a rental from Avis in Huntington Station on Long Island, and have spoken to the car renters, a couple from Queens. New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Wednesday that the car had been found in Queens.

The person being interviewed is not believed to be the shooter but may have details about what happened, a law enforcement official told NBCNewYork.com. The 40-year-old man is from Queens and may be a friend of the getaway driver.

Investigators also say they may have a photo of the getaway driver that was snapped as the car went through the toll booth at the Queens-Midtown Tunnel shortly after the shooting on 58th Street Monday.

It was not immediately clear if the man and woman who rented the car were believed to have any connection to the shooting of Brandon Woodard, who was gunned down just before 2 p.m. local time as he walked west on 58th Street between Broadway and Seventh Avenue in New York.

Surveillance video shows the suspect getting out of a late model Lincoln sedan about 10 minutes before the shooting. He waits while Woodard passes him, then falls in step behind. As the suspect approaches, the victim, still walking, looks back briefly at the suspect, who by then is directly behind him, and turns forward again. Woodard does not appear to recognize the shooter.

The suspect then pulls a gun from his pocket and fires one shot into Woodard's head.

The video shows Woodard falling to the ground as the suspect calmly walks to the getaway car, which was driven by another man and parked on the street. The driver waited for traffic to clear before speeding away.

Also on NBCNewYork.com: Police release surveillance video of suspect in fatal shooting

Woodard, 31, was pronounced dead at the hospital. Shell casings for the silver, semi-automatic weapon were found at the scene. A law enforcement official says the bullet recovered at the scene matches bullets recovered at a 2009 Queens shooting, when 12 rounds were fired into a Mangin Avenue home in St. Albans, damaging windows and doors. No one was hurt,?but police recovered ballistics evidence and are looking into the case for possible new leads.

Authorities have said they believe Woodard's shooting was planned in advance, and police are investigating possible motives.

Woodard, who arrived in New York on a one-way plane ticket Sunday evening, had checked out of the Thompson Hotel moments before the shooting, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said at a news conference Tuesday.

Government outlines controversial gay marriage plans

LONDON (Reuters) - The government outlined plans on Tuesday to allow gay marriage that have split Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservatives and raised fears among religious groups they will be forced to hold same-sex weddings.

Gay couples may already have "civil partnerships", conferring the same legal rights as marriage, but campaigners say the distinction gives the impression that society considers gay relationships inferior.

Cameron has stressed he is a strong backer of gay marriage but does not plan to force his party's members of parliament to vote in favour of legislation, which will apply to England and Wales and be introduced by the end of the current parliament in 2015. Scotland has separate plans for same-sex marriage.

Opponents of the measure include the Church of England and several members of Cameron's own party.

"In each century parliament has acted, sometimes radically, to ensure marriage reflects our society, to keep it relevant and meaningful," Culture Secretary Maria Miller told parliament.

"For me, extending marriage to same-sex couples will strengthen, not weaken, this vital institution, and the response I'm publishing today makes clear that we will enable same-sex couples to get married through a civil ceremony," she said.

"We will also enable those religious organisations who wish to conduct same sex marriages to be able to do so," she added.

ANGLICAN EXCLUSION

However, she made clear that under the proposals it would remain illegal for churches belonging to the Church of England to marry gay couples - an exclusion the established church itself requested.

Other religious groups, such as Quakers and liberal Jewish groups, could choose to marry gays, but under the proposals no individual minister would be compelled to wed a same-sex couple.

Gay rights group Stonewall welcomed the legislation.

"We're delighted about the government's statement today and welcome the promise to legislate for equal marriage as warmly as on the three previous occasions that this announcement has been made," said Stonewall Chief Executive Ben Summerskill.

"While we fully respect the point of view of those who oppose the government's plans, our advice to them remains that if you don't approve of same-sex marriage, then just make sure you don't get married to someone of the same sex," he added.

The move to legalise gay marriage comes after a public consultation on the issue, and is seen by political analysts as a way for Cameron to broaden the appeal of his centre-right Conservative Party and burnish its liberal values.

Same-sex marriage is backed by many prominent Conservatives and the party's partners in coalition government, the Lib Dems, as well as the opposition Labour Party.

However, the plan has run into strong opposition from some Conservative MPs, on religious grounds and because of what they say is a lack of a democratic mandate.

Some also say there more pressing issues at a time of economic weakness and spending cuts than gay marriage.

"First of all I am a Christian and I do not believe in the redefinition of marriage. Millions of people across the country take that view as well," Conservative lawmaker Peter Bone said.

"However, my argument is this. I have re-read the Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat manifestos and the coalition agreement. There is nothing in there about re-defining marriage, so there is no democratic mandate," he added.

Opinion polls on the issue have shown mixed results.

Eleven other countries have already legalised same-sex marriage. The U.S. Supreme Court stepped into the debate for the first time last week by agreeing to review two challenges to federal and state laws that define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

Oregon mall shooting survivor in serious condition

(Reuters) - A teenage girl wounded in a shooting spree at an Oregon shopping mall that left three dead, including the suspected gunman, is in serious condition, a hospital official said on Wednesday.

Kristina Shevchenko was one of at least three people shot when a man wearing what appeared to be a hockey mask opened fire with a rifle at the crowded Clackamas Town Center in the Portland suburb of Happy Valley.

Police will release the names of the victims and the shooter at a news press conference at 10 a.m. PST (1800 GMT) on Wednesday, Clackamas County Undersheriff Matt Ellington said on CNN. Shevchenko's name was released by the Oregon Health & Science University Hospital on authorization of her family.

"The family is doing OK," Shevchenko's brother, Yevgeniy, said. He said his sister was 15 years old and declined further comment.

In a Facebook posting Tuesday night, Yevgeniy Shevchenko said: "As of now she is stable and sleeping. the bullet went through bruising her lung, it missed any vital organs and it missed her ribs. she will need 2 more operations. we appreciate any and all support including your prayers! thank you."

Ellington said on CNN that police have recovered a rifle, multiple shell casings and a mask matching the one witnesses said was worn by the shooter.

He said authorities have no idea of the motive of the gunman, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and appears to have had no connection to the victims.

The afternoon rampage touched off panic inside the mall, sending thousands of shoppers streaming out as police and fire crews arrived.

The incident marked the latest in a string of shooting rampages this year that included the killing of 12 people and wounding of 58 at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Colorado.

In Oregon, police evacuated terrified shoppers, who were reported by local media and via Twitter to have hidden in the back rooms of shops as gunshots rang out in the 1.4 million- square-foot mall.

"Shooting in the middle of clackamas town center. I'm stuck in the back room of build a bear!" one person tweeted.

High school student Hannah Baggs, 14, told the Oregonian newspaper that she got a close look at the gunman before he entered the mall and opened fire.

"He was, like, 10 feet away from us, wearing a white mask and carrying something heavy with both hands," Baggs said in a report on the newspaper's website. "He went running into the store."

Police and SWAT teams established a perimeter around the scene and worked to evacuate the mall as they searched for the gunman. Video footage from inside the mall, aired on CNN, showed shoppers heading toward exits with their arms raised above their heads.

Ellington said the Clackamas Town Center mall had been used recently by police for a mass evacuation drill.

Hitman: Absolution Review - Video Games | Games Reviews Online ...

Agent 47 is back. Hitman Absolution transports us into the much-adored franchise, letting us glimpse the world through the eyes of a cold-blooded contract killer. Returning after a six-year hiatus, does the game triumph over Blood Money, its much-acclaimed predecessor? The answer is a bit complicated.

Purists of the franchise will agonize over how Absolution renders a largely linear gameplay experience compared to Blood Money, which focused little on story and more on the art of discreet killing -- a runaway hit among fans. Absolution also softens Agent 47?s persona a bit, indulging in a story that explores the humane and emotional aspects of the much-feared killer, diverging from the ruthless mercenary that he was in Blood Money.

In a cook's disguise...

However, the subtle changes introduced by IO Interactive in Hitman: Absolution are more good than bad ? we delved into them in Absolution?s sneak preview. Yes, the story is like a raunchy B-movie ? completely shoddy except the raunchy bits ? which leaves a lot to be desired, but if you detach yourself from the story, the game isn?t disappointing. Not by a long shot.

The game?s cut-scenes are akin to watching a movie, with characters delivering a dramatic performance with exquisite voice acting and facial animations. Absolution?s soundtrack is eerie and haunting, complementing its myriad visual landscapes very well, and immersing you in the game?s world with great ease. The in-game environment is stunningly beautiful at times.

The gameplay borrows stealth elements from Batman: Arkham City and Assassin?s Creed, where the game?s Instinct meter lets you see through obstacles and walls to identify enemies and targets -- much like Batman?s detective mode. Another new feature in Hitman is Point Shooting, which lets you pin multiple targets and shoot them in a single trigger blast ? kinda like Max Payne?s Bullet Time.

Remaining unseen...

Consecutive cut-scenes are interrupted by you taking over Agent 47 in a mission that has multiple sub-levels. Although each sub-level in a game is a tiny sandbox arena, once you go past it, you can never revisit it later ? which is sad. But in any given level, you still have the freedom to explore the locale and plan and execute the hit the way you want. You?ll interact with a lot of elements like bottles or screwdrivers, subdue enemies and hide their bodies, switch disguises and, of course, kill a lot of people. A lot.

Of course, the AI does behave a bit dumb at times and minor physics bugs are visible in tight corners, but that doesn?t take away from Absolution?s overall mood and excitement. It doesn?t have a versus multiplayer mode, but introduces Contracts ? you design your own contract kills in existing levels for other players to execute them. This is a great addition to the game.

Shooting nuns...

Verdict:
It isn?t the quintessential Hitman experience of the past. But Agent 47 has learned some new tricks and inhabits a more interactive world, while still trying to sneak around unnoticed, and doing what he does best ? killing softly.

Samsung M400 (Sprint)

In the age of texting, it's easy to forget that the?cell phone was initially meant for making calls. That's still true, but most phones do a whole lot more than that nowadays. Not everyone wants or needs a smartphone, though, and it's getting harder and harder to find a quality alternative. Luckily, the free Samsung M400 for Sprint fits the bill. It's a super-simple flip phone with a large number pad and good call quality. While it's pretty much devoid of any multimedia features, it's a good choice for anyone who needs a phone primarily for talking.

Design and Call Quality
The Samsung M400 measures 3.84 by 1.99 by 0.72 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.65 ounces. It's made entirely of dark gray and black plastic, with a lightly textured panel on the back and a faux-metallic finish on the front. There's a Camera button on the right, as well as buttons for Volume and Voice Control on the left. The 1.07-inch external display shows the time, date, reception, and battery life at a glance, and will display the name or number for incoming calls.

Flip the phone open to access the M400's excellent number pad. The backlit keys are large, well-spaced, and springy. You won't have any trouble dialing here. The control pad above is equally well crafted. There's a directional pad with a Select button in the middle, flanked by buttons to start and end a call and activate the speakerphone. You also get a button that automatically dials 911 (you're asked if you actually want to dial it after your press it), as well as a programmable In Case of Emergency button. You can add up to three contacts you'd want to notify in the event of an emergency.

The internal 2.4-inch display features 320-by-240-pixel resolution. Text and images look sharp enough, but it's highly reflective, and narrow viewing angles make it tough to see if you aren't looking at it dead-on.

The M400 is a 3G device with no Wi-Fi. Reception is good, and call quality is solid across the board. Voices are clear in the earpiece, and volume goes extremely loud, but the louder you go, voices start to crackle and sound a bit fuzzy. Calls made with the phone sound very clear and easy to hear, with good noise cancellation. Calls were fine through a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset, and the Nuance-powered voice control app worked very well. You can use it to make calls or send text messages, or even to open the phone's Web browser. The speakerphone sounds okay, and gets loud enough to use outside. Battery life was on the low side, at 4 hours and 56 minutes of talk time.

Apps, Multimedia, and Conclusions
The M400's UI is simple to navigate and responds quickly to key presses. The home screen displays all of the same information as the external display, and gives you quick access to your contacts and text messages. The main menu, meanwhile, features nine different shortcuts, including your camera, messages, Web, and app store. Don't get too excited about apps, though?there's barely anything in the store, and you only get 9.61MB of free internal storage, with no microSD card slot for expansion.

There are no email or IM clients, though you can still access email through the Access NetFront 4.2 browser. The browser delivers decent WAP pages, but it's really only good for occasional use. Instead of IMs, you're better off sending text messages. The M400 displays messages individually, or threaded, in the style of a conversation. You'll need to type by using the number keys, which is always a pain, but at least they're big and easy to press.

Multimedia features are nearly nonexistent. There's no music player, video player, or camcorder. You do get a 1.3-megapixel camera on the front of the phone. It lacks an LED flash and auto-focus, though it comes with some fun features like continuous shooting, mosaic, and panorama. Unfortunately, test photos look soft and hazy, almost like someone smeared Vaseline over the lens.?[Really? Ew.?Ed]?And since there's no memory card slot, the only way to get photos off the phone is to send them over the air.

So while the Samsung M400 doesn't have much in the way of extras, it isn't trying to be anything other than what it is: a cheap, simple voice phone. The only other flip phones on Sprint are the rugged Kyocera DuraCore ?and Kyocera DuraXT, both of which are far too big and bulky for casual users. The Samsung Array?gets you a keyboard and some extra media features, but has painfully slow 2G speeds for Web browsing, and isn't quite as simple to use as the M400.
