Nobel Prize in Economics can save lives - West
Sometimes it?s not the surgeon who saves your life, but the economist. The application of economic theories in the medical field in fact has a positive implication in kidney transplantation. It?s called Nepke, and it?s a methodology that allowed Alvin Roth and his colleague Lloyd Shapley to save lives and to win the Nobel Prize for Economics. Four years ago, at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, six people waiting for a kidney transplant had found their donors, which were, however, incompatible. Only through the algorithm developed by economists was possible to create a sort of ?kidney exchange system? and perform the delicate surgery.
